Psalmist
I downloaded the recent Windows Security update from MS and failed to notice they included IE7. Suddenly, my active window DEactivated itself, even while typing in it [Outlook Express], and my screensaver stopped turning on in my 10-minute set time. [running a Dell 8400 with XP SP2(?) Media Center]. After a couple of weeks of this, I found another forum that discussed the IE7 inclusion and some other problems that might be associated with this one. I have now uninstalled IE7 and scanned my system with Avast! [it found 77 files it had not seen before, which I moved to the "chest"]. I followed that with Spybot. On restart, the START window was about 60% blank! Shut it down completely and turned it back on. The START window appears to have re-populated, but the active window DEactivating itself in 40 to 120 seconds, and the screensaver issue continue. I started backing up my files in preparation for the worst case... Anyone else seen this thing with either the Active window or the screensaver? Is it related to the MS Update or IE7? After backup, I plan to try the system restore back to Jan 1, which I think is before I did the update download. Other advice?
gi7omy
OUCH!!!! Personally, in that situation, I'd haul off all data and store it elsewhere, then shove in the XP CD and reboot, re-format and re-install I never really had any faith in 'System Restore' anyway
Psalmist
OUCH!!!! After that is completed, I will be more comfortable in trying the restore process... or the reload... but hopeful I don't have to go that far. gi7omy
Best of luck to you - I'm on the verge of a 'flatten and re-install' anyway (XP has decided to start playing silly beggars on me as well). EMC still works but some of my other stuff is acting very oddly
golinux
Sorry to hear you're having problems, Psalmist. What a way to spend the weekend! I never really had any faith in 'System Restore' anyway System Restore has worked for me but not everytime. It is my first option to "fix" things (which fortunately doesn't happen often). When I was having trouble getting EMC up and running last winter, System Restore did not fix things and I had to use one of the Acronis backup images to set things right. Never had to reformat ever though . . . I shudder at the thought of all those MS updates!!!
wraithtdk
Sounds like your processor power is being hogged. Try this. When you start you computer, hit ctrl + alt + del, hit processes, and click the CPU column header so that it sorts the processes by how much of your CPU they are taking up. Keep an eye on that window while you're doing your thing, and that should tell you what's hogging your power (look for a process that's taking up an inordinate percentage of your CPU). When you get a process name, come back and let me know. If nothing seems out of the ordinary there, download hijack this!, generalte a long, and post it here. Here is another freebee that may be helpful. It tracks what is taking up CPU time and provides a host of other information.
