Engine initialization has failed: (could not load CDR4)

A. Problem:

When I click the executable, I receive the following message: Easy CD creator Engine initialization has failed: (could not load CDR4)

Also, I decided to try to open CD copier. I received a long pause, then a series of messages that I can only paraphrase except for number 1. which is exact.:

1. CD copier could not locate a supported CD-ROM reader. You will not be able to make disc-to-disc copies.

2. couldn't find the drive (I think it specifically mentioned cd-rom)

Attempted Solutions:

This program came with my plextor drive. I tried to uninstall through add/remove programs, then I reinstalled, and had the same problems. The program worked fine this past august. I'm trying to think of what has changed since then. Here are some ideas: my dad disabled our secondary Hard-drive (maxtor) because it died. Our primary drive (C:) is a seagate. He recently switched back to spybot from MS anit-spyware. He tried uninstalling spybot thinking it might be the problem, no fix!

One other possibility. I recently installed software for an hp photosmart A430 (docking) printer. I even had the unit connected via USB, but it ended up being defective, so I returned it, and uninstalled the hp photosmart software (only a portion of the software on the disc).

Note: My dad has been able to burn audio cd's with a program called eac without any problems. He's used this program for years. Also, I ran a virus scan on 1-29-07; nothing detected.

B. Easy CD Creator 4.05? (unsure of exact version i.e to the decimal; I get this approximation from a file called, ecdc_v405_up.exe, which appears to be an update that we downloaded at some point.)

C.Windows 2000 Professional; AMD athlon processor; 850MHZ; 256K RAM.

D.Plextor CD-R PX-W1210A (Primary drive)

HP CD-Writer+8200 (secondary drive)

E. We use zone alarm, and symantec antivirus.

Thanks in advance for your consideration of this issue.

Sincerely,

Justin

Have you added anything else recently to the computer in the way of programs

Specifically - Internet Explorer 7 and/or Media Player 11 - either of those will trash any Roxio product up to at least EMC8

No. I have media player 9, real player 10. Is it possible that the hp software I installed for the photosmart printer has left some traces that are causing the problem?

Thanks for your response.

Both WinPlayer 9 and RealPlayer 10 and above will "break" ECDC 5, so I think it would also break ECDC 4.

WnPlayer 9 doesn't come completely back out short of a reformat.

I've been using wnplayer 9 and Realplayer 10 for years with easy cd creator with no problems!

I decided to reinstall the software again including the update to version 4.05.

Here is some clarification on the error messages I get when I click cd copier:

1. CD copier cannot find Easy cd creator. Please, reinstall easy cd creator.

2. CD copier could not locate a supported CD-rom reader. You will not be able to make disc-to-disc copies.

I also tried to use the Windows Installer clean up utility. I only removed the first listing because it is associated with the hp software that I have been suspecting (appeared to be some sort of help file). There are quite a few other listings including hph_software_req and hph_readme that I didn't touch but may be related to the photosmart software.

I did some searching and found a copy of the file called Cdr4vsd.vxd. Do you think this will do any good? If so, where do I put it in Win 2002 Prof. ? The instructions for earlier versions of Windows say, "Copy this file into your windows\system\iosubsys directory, reboot the machine and use your CD Writer."

Thanks

I just went through the same thing. I had installed IE 7 but am not sure

that was the cause of the problem. I removed IE 7 and reinstalled IE 6,

still same problem . Much discussion with HP support (machine is still in

warrantee and came with XP Pro installed. They even gave me two new drives,

no help. Finally they had me uninstall all Roxio products and re-install

Sonic. Sonic worked fine as did Lightscribe. Lightscribe writes labels on

the top of CDs/DVDs. Still Roxio would not work. Finally did a partial

reinstall/repair of XP using the XP repair CD that came with the system.

This fixed two problems, Roxio now works and the problem with Norton Ghost

that I was having at the same time went away. Ghost seemed to think that

ALL of my drives were HIDDEN or did not have DRIVE LETTERS. No other

software complained. Sonic now fails but HP had told me early in the debug

phase that Roxio and Sonic would not cohabit well together.

Hope this helps some. I still don't know what the cause of the problem was

but many folks here say that IE 7 will cause it.

:D

OK - to start with - Internet Explorer 7 WILL wreck any Roxio program up to EMC8. That is a basic fact.

Also - Sonic DLA will NOT coexist with the Roxio equivalent (Drag to Disc, etc). In fact, no packet writing s/w will co-exist with another on the same machine.

Also - be warned that Windows Media Player 11 will also kill off ECD (not to mention clamping down harder on DRM than earlier versions)
