DVD burns fine, but won't mount when re-inserted

Hi all-

 

I've run into a problem here - I can burn a DVD (data) with no issues - it burns fine. However, after ejecting it, if I reinstet the disc, my computer spits it right out. I believe this began after updating.

 

However, if I put it in a different computer, it seems to mount just fine.

 

I searched here but didn't see this issue, so hopefully someone can help.

 

I'm on OSX 10.4.8 on a G5 dual 2 gig.

Try going into Preferences and uncheck the Mount it option to see if it helps.

Thanks for the note. Do you mean the checkbox that says "Install "Toast It" and "Mount It" desktop menu items" ?

 

Anyway, I unchecked it, restarted, and still have the problem.

 

By the way, the problem exists whether or not Toast is running.

 

Again, I can insert the DVD into another computer without any trouble, and I can mount DVDs burned previously using my Mac's built-in burning without any trouble either.

1. Try with a different brand of disc.

2. Download and install Combo Updater.

3. Test mounting the disc under a different user account.

I have the exact same problem. My discs burn fine and will play in my Panasonic DVD player but won't on my eMac. What's really odd is that they will mount fine after burning but never again.

 

Any ideas on what to try or have you heard any word from Roxio Customer Service as to how to fix the problem?

Could it be your burner ?

 

It has been my experience/finding that in recent years all my "Mac" burners simply fail with warnings such as you have there. It's a manufacturing problem/fault especially when they manufacture millions and millions.

 

 

I replaced my burners with LG's.

I doubt it:

 

1) It burns fine, as evidenced by the DVDs mounting successfully on other computers,

2) I can mount DVDs which were burned with Apple's built-in burning,

3) I have no problems mounting/running commercially-produced DVDs.

 

That said... who knows?

I think I have the solution to your problem! I was having the same concern as you - DVDs burn fine but won't mount when reinserted in the drive. Someone suggested I clean my SuperDrive on my eMac. I bought the Memorex DVD Lens Cleaner (for around $15) and just tried it moments ago.

 

Happily, all the DVDs that wouldn't work previously will now mount just fine after only a 1 minute clean with the Lens Cleaner. Voila! I reckon this will work for you, too.

It's been almost a month and I'm curious to see if cleaning your burner solved the disc mounting problem. I presume that it did seeing as you haven't made any more posts regarding it. Either that or you just gave up!

I'm curious to see if this has helped also. My Lacie exter d2 drive is doing the same thing. It burns fine, reads commercial DVDs fine, it read iMac DVD burns fine. But for some reason it refuses to read its own burned disc. It does it the first time, but afterwards it spits it out, but the disc reads fine on all other drives.

Same problem. If anyone can solve this I'll bake them a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Frustrating, to say the least.

This is not related to the issue of this thread. You might want to create a new topic about this. Also, you can find your CD key by logging into your Roxio account if you registered your copy of Toast 7.

I've burned several DVD's and the symptoms are the same for all of them:

After burning and verifying successfully, I am asked if I'd like to Mount or Eject the DVD.

If I choose Mount, the disk loads successfully (I can see it in the Finder under my "Computer" directory with all of my other drives). Not only that, I am able to use whatever software I like to view it. Once I eject the DVD, I can no longer get it to mount on my computer. It doesn't matter what software is running at the time, or if no software is running, the DVD won't mount. After about 3 or 4 seconds of VERY quiet searching, the disk spins up to speed for about 45 seconds or so, before "spinning down" and failing to mount (there is no message of any kind from the system that there was a problem reading the disk). In fact, the disk doesn't even show up in the Disk Utility at this point. I can mount and view a DVD that was burned on another computer, or a "factory" DVD movie that I either purchased or rented. Also, I can take any of the DVD's that I burned on my computer (the ones that won't mount) and view them successfully with the low-end Sony DVD player connected to my TV.

 

This problem only seems to occur when burning DVD's. I don't have any issues with music or data CD's mounting.

 

I've scoured the internet and have yet to find a solution to this problem.

Have any of you folk having trouble with the discs mounting tried to clean your DVD burner/drive? After one run through with the cleaner (I used a Memorex DVD Lens Cleaner) my drive started reading discs again. I had the exact problem you're describing, too.

I finally broke down and bought a new CD/DVD burner and my problems went away! This really surprised me since even scratchy factory DVDs that wouldn't read on my DVD player would always read on my computer's DVD drive.
