Video Project not buring right

Hammerhead

Question

Howdy, folks.

New user, got a couple questions. Hope someone can help. Since this could be attributed to any number of areas within the software, I'm not sure where to post it. Mods, please move this if necessary to the appropriate forum?

OH, and before someone throws the first rock, YES, I've done a search. :)

Here goes.

I am having trouble getting a DVD project to burn properly to my disk. So far, I've made about four coasters. I started (if memory serves) with the DVD Without Menus, added my MPEG of a video capture (TV program I want to preserve), edited out the commercials, and then went to burn.

The project seems encode properly, and something is burned to the media, but when I remove the disk and replace it, the media is not recognized by Windows.

System is:

WinXP Pro

Intel 2.8C

512DDR

2x WD Raptor 10K SATA (Raid 1)

Plextor PX708A

ATI AIW Radeon 9000

CL SoundBlaster Live 5.1

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Are you burning to disc directly? If so, try burning to an image file first and then use Disc Copier or Creator Classic to burn the ISO to disc.

Did you get any errors? It might help if you explain the steps you took to burn your dvd. And, make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner and have tried other brands of media.

What are you playing it back on? Some DVD Players can be really picky about playing back home burned discs. Try playing it back on the computer that burned it. If it plays, then nothing is wrong with the burn.

Same machine. That's what freaks me out.

Just tried another encode/burn at a reduced speed of 2.4x to no avail. After it's done, I opened the drawer and closed it. When trying to access the drive, I get an error message saying the Windows can't read from the disk, the media may be corrupt, or in a format that Windows doesn't recognize. This is the same PC that I use to regularly watch movies, and successfully burned other data DVDs, so this just doesn't make any sense.

I could, conceivably, start the project all over again using the menuing system, and edit out all the commercials again, but I couldn't find how to remove those obnoxious cheesy background images, nor do I really need a menu structure. That's why I opted for the 'quick' method.

What gives???

Follow Paul's advice and also, check for a firmware update for your burner on the manufacturer's site. Also pick up a rewriteable discs or 2 (RW) until you get the burning worked out. They can be erased and re-used so you aren't making a bunch of "coasters"

Definitely try "burning" your project to an image (.ISO) file first, then you can try using both Disc Copier and Creator Classic to do the final writing to disc. Some have felt that Creator Classic makes discs more reliably than Disc Copier, and when you tell My DVD to burn directly to disc, I don't know which of those, or a third application it's using to write.

One other thought, just to verify your drive and media, try making a Data DVD disc of some files, maybe even the files you're using for your video DVD project (as a backup). Write those using Creator Classic and see if the disc is properly readable afterwards. If not, it may be that your drive doesn't like the discs you've got and a different brand may solve the problem. But a "simple" data disc is a lot quicker way to test out the drive/media combination.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Beerman, yes, I am burning directly to disk. I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you ask "what procedure" I used, but to reiterate what I posted initially, I used the DVD Without Menus, added the MPEG file, edited out commercials, and then hit the 'burn' button. Movie encodes, and something is burned to the disk, but it just won't play.

Firmware updates are all applied.

Other files burn, and read, fine with Creator Classic, so it's not a media incompatability.

Thanks again for your help.

Also try reducing the burn speed to 4X.

You can do it in Creator Classic but I've found Disc Copier aims for the speed of the disc.
