Okay, This Is Weird

Question

I was converting an old concert I had on VHS to DVD, with chapters and menus added. It was converted into an MPEG-2 file first (about 80 minutes worth) and when I was in MyDVD it was displayed that it would record in SP mode, which was fine. But when I went to burn (I only had the burn to disc checked at 6x, with my external hard drive as destination- which has about 200 GB left) it came up with a dialog box that read something to the effect of not having enough space on my destination drive. However, when I added the checkbox of the one below (save image file) it burned and saved an ISO image to the destination I selected.

I've burned mpeg-2's recently without having to save an ISO file..... Any comments on what was different this time? Thanks in advance.....

6GB isn't much for WinXP temp files. Besides MyDV creating temp files, windows itself creates plenty of them.

Open MyDVD

Go to TOOLS/OPTIONS

Change the location where MyDVD creates some of its temp files to another internal drive if possible.

Does it have to be an internal drive, or can i just create a folder named "Temp" on the same external drive I keep all my projects on (my F:\ drive) and point it there?

Thanks!

I've got a USB drive and it does work for me but I use an internal drive as it's faster and my external has a power down mode after so many minutes of non use which I think gets in the way.

I think to make sure there are no other problems, you should try the internal drive for the temp files. If that works, then try the external. If that doesn't, we'll have an answer.

Actually if you set temp to 'X':\temp where X is the external drive it should work but you will need to keep the external powered up all the time as Gary says

In control panel, system you can switch the location for temp and tmp in the advanced tab

Thanks to all of you for your input. As far as what gary said- do i need to leave on my external drive ALL THE TIME, or did you mean just when I'm using EMC 9 for anything? Why, if I'm not in EMC 9 would I need to leave it on, or am I just missing the obvious?

If you set the windows temp file to the external - it has to be on all the time the computer is. Also if you do that, go to My Documents in the start menu, right click on that and change it from C:\ (in properties) to the external - it will then shift all docs to that which is handy in the event of a re-install cos the external won't be touched

Videowave/MyDVD

You don't have to change the Window's temp folders. I was just suggesting to change the temp folders that Videowave/MyDVD uses only.

I think that might be the easier way. I'll just create a temp folder on my external drive like i said above, and then just point Videowave/MyDVD to it.....Videowave/MyDVD

I don't know why this happens but it has been reported before. Is your external drive USB or Firewire?

I suggest burning at best quality to an ISO then let Disc Copier transcode the file to best size when burning to disc.

Also, I like your handle! :) I'll be singing the theme song all day now, thank you!

I'm a bit confused. How can you select the external HARD DRIVE when you check 'BURN TO DISC'? The hard drive shouldn't even show up as an option.

The burn speed (6X) only applies when burning directly to a blank DVD only.

I don't do this but can't he have both the burn to disc and burn to ISO at the same time? The ISO being burned to the external drive. I think that's what he means.

Probably, but that's not how it reads. We'll know when he answers back. User should be able to check all three at once.

When I selected Burn To Disc before, it did just that- it burns directly to my E:\ drive, which is my DVD Writer. What I was trying to explain is that before it would burn the project with no problem. This time- after the "destination drive full" dialog box, I checked the second checkbox (in addition to the "burn to disc" one), and it created an ISO file on my external USB hard drive (F:\), as well as burning the DVD- with no destination full error.

Any ideas?

P.S. Thanks Beerman- I'm forever stuck in the 70's! :)

A thought as to what may be happening (probably totally wrong but anyway)

When you selected burn to disc, the program has tried to set up a temp file prior to the burn and that would default to your C: drive and, seeing that is pretty full, it errored. Selecting the external for the output as a .iso has probably made the temp file there.

As I said - just a guess

Thanks gi7omy,

I thought something along those lines too, but I still have about 6 GB of space left on my c:\ drive. I wouldn't think that temp files take up that much space. I should also add that I delete my temp folder frequently, once projects are burned to disc? Could this have affected anything?
