Extremely Slow Audio CD copy

embee

Question

I've owned about 4 versions of Toast, and Toast 8 is like trip back to 1997! With the exact same equipment I used with Toast 6, it takes about 4 times as long to copy an Audio CD. The blank CD-R is rated up to 52X, but on the "Best" setting in Toast will only write at 6-8 times. The older versions gave options for faster burn speeds, up to the disc's rating; the highest choice Toast 8 gives me is 4x. What's up????

Thank you for your responses. You know, I think I've figured it out! When the "Add CD-Text" box is checked, the burning rate must be limited. When I went back to burn another disc, I unchecked the box, and the range up to 48x became available with the same media. Problem solved! Thanks again.

I have a Pioneer DVR-109; My concern is that the same media and same recorder worked MUCH faster in earlier versions of Toast and I can't figure why that should be. I've also noticed a number of posts about slow DVD burning. Thanks.

Yours is the first I've ever read about slow CD-R burning. What's especially odd is that with the blank disc inserted you say that 4X is the maximum selectable speed. The info on available speeds is coming from the drive. Have you tried testing with an earlier version of Toast since you've discovered this issue using Toast 8?

Is this an external drive? Maybe it is just a coincidence that the fastest CD-R burn speed on a USB 1.1 interface is 4X. If your drive is connected to a USB port maybe you've connected it to a USB 1.1 instead of USB 2 port. Or maybe there is something wrong with your system and that USB 2 is defaulting to USB 1.1. But maybe this isn't connected via USB at all. One thing you can do is download and apply the 10.4.8 combined system update on top of your existing 10.4.8 system. This fixes interface issues that can happen during incremental system updates.

The reports about slow DVD burning (which happens with some Toast 6 and 7 users, too) are normally caused by poor quality media or media that isn't supported by a drive's firmware. In those cases the user still can select the faster available speeds in the Recorder Settings window; it's just that the drive can't make the burn that fast. But your situation is unlike any I've heard about because the available speeds for a 52X CD top out at 4X. As I said, my CD-R media doesn't have a selectable speed (one that is in bold face) slower than 8X.

Something is wrong. The drive's firmware checks the media to determine what speeds are supported for burning. What drive (internal or external) and media are you using? Have you checked for firmware updates for the drive?

By the way, it is a good idea to burn Audio CDs slowly. I never burn them at faster than 8X (which is the slowest speed my 52X media supports).
