compressing mpeg2 before creating dvr

chevycde

Question

I currently have the Sonic MYDVD 6.1 (came with my Dell Laptop) and I am looking for a program that will compress recorded before creating the dvd. I am looking for features similar to the DivX Conversion program which allows you size a mpg to a portion of a cd (like 1/4) and also save to a format that can be used in the create dvd part of the program.

Recently this Sonic program is showing that Easy CD Creator 9 is the upgrade for my current version. I dont want to upgrade if this program doesnt do everything I need it to do. I have not found any detailed info on the compression options on the product info.

thanks

Not sure what you are asking. Just about any video editor on the marketing has the ability to OUTPUT TO FILE with many options for compression - including Videowave 9. Videowave 9 has options like MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, DivX and WMV. It's up to the user to know how these files can be used although the output selections has dumbed it down for less knowledgeable users like 'MPEG 2 best quality for DVD' is one option.

I dont want to buy more than 1 program. I want one program that can edit, compress mpg files and make dvds. I have had trouble getting free versions or eval versions of various editing and compression programs to work properly. It seems that EZCreator may do compression but I need someone who has the program to tell me what it can do since their marketing materials do not indicate. I dont want a tv show per dvd for things that arent that important. I would like to put 3 or 4 hr shows on a dvd. I have had some sucess with VideoRedo with editing but unable to get its compression to work properly no matter which setting I use it creates a mpg file the same size. I dont know if this is a bug with the program or its because its an trial version. Have had lots of problems with MS MovieMaker crashing or its unable to read in my mpg files that other programs read just fine.

I use the sonic dvd program to make my dvds currently but it doesnt have editing or compression features it wants me to upgrade to creator 9.

Maximum length for MyDVD 9 is 3 hours 1min. and there is no guarantee you will like the final quality. The more you compress the video, the lower the quality. It's nothing but simple math. You can get about twice that on a dual layer disc.

I dont care about the quality I just need to know this EZCreator will compress a file in mpeg2 format into a format that can be used on a dvd. I snagged a top 10 off letterman which was 200mb and wanted to get it small enough to email to a friend and had major problems finding a program that would compress. MS MovieMaker worked but it doesnt work on videos of 30-60 minutes long it hangs or crashes.

any one really know the answer to my original question - what compression can ezcreator 9 do? Anyone have a link to the manual for 9. I'm not purchasing this upgrade until I know more about this products capabilities.

Then you shouldn't be using MPEG. Try using WMV or DivX. The ABSOLUTE lowest bitrate in Videowave 'output to file' is only 2MB/s which is not low enough to create a small file for emailing. You will also be limited by your friends email capacity. For example, My bellsouth email account is only 5MB. PERIOD. That's why I use Yahoo or Netscape, but then they only allow 10MB attachments. So you need to keep that in mind, too.

If WMM2 hangs or crashes, you probably have some serious OS issues. I've NEVER seen WMM crash.

divx or wmv is not supported in my version of sonic dvd - my tv encoder AdverTv 6.0 doesnt support saving to DivX or WMV but does support WMA and WAV. I would still need something that would encode/convert to these formats (unless EZ does this).

Searches on web show many have problems with WMM2 and mpeg2 files. Will have to do some research to figure out why this is hanging. The other event error I get seems to be a known problem based on searches.

thanks
