Exact Copy Of Hd

klink1948

Question

Will Back Up My PC give me an exact copy of my HD so I can do a restore without reinstalling the OS or programs? I want to put a copy of my 120gig internal drive on my 160gig external drive and be able to copy that to a new HD when the current one crashes.

The current drive has 4 Ntfs, 1 Fat32, and 1 Fat16(for Bootmagic) partitions. I am currently dual booting with Me an a separate 30gig drive. Me will not be part of the backup.

I have Data Lifeguard Tools 11 from Western Digital and have only used it to get a new drive all ready (partitioned and formated) for use and know that they have an option in their program to transfer one HD to another but I'm not sure if it will transfer all of ones personal files etc. with the transfer. As I remember there is some text information regarding exactly what it will do on the disk.

BTW, this is just for information only regarding warranty of a new Western Digital drive, but if you purchase a "RETAIL" drive directly from WD, the warranty is only good for one year. However if you purchase a WD drive as OEM, it's good for 3 years (Certain dives). One would think it would be jsut the opposite way.

Nope. BackupMyPC is a backup program that you would need to re-install onto a new hard drive that has an OS installed in order to restore the whole disc.

What you are describing you want ot do is a Disc Image backup. For that you might want to check into programs for that like Acronis TureImage or Norton Ghost. Those seem to be the most often mentioned disc image progams around here.

Thanks for the info. I have another one to add.

Data Lifeguard Tools 11 for Windows from Western Digital(free).

Personally I use Norton Ghost and have always had success with it.The thing I do recommend is to verify the backup when it's made,no matter which program you use. That way you know that your backup is good and will work in case of an emergency.
