For any radio amateurs out there in the US

I just got this from the IRTS news broadcast (Irish Radio Transmitters' Society)

"Morse Requirement dropped in US

The FCC has modified the Amateur Radio Service rules,

eliminating Morse code as an exam requirement. The new

rules come into effect on Friday the 23rd of February

2007. The changes will grant limited HF operating

privileges to Technician licensees on 80, 40, 15, and

10 meters.

Once the new rules take effect, Technicians can upgrade

to General by passing a single written exam and to

Amateur Extra by also passing a written exam."

If you hear me on - don't ask me about CDs or DVDs :)

As one who has spent many enjoyable hours on CW, I'm saddened by the softening of licence requirements. For me it was a point of pride to copy by ear at 20 -25 wpm. Maybe it will attract more cb er's now - 10-4 good buddy.

It was dropped here over a year ago and it hasn't really brought any chicken boxers in to be honest. The course of study required (as for the Tech licence over there and the 'B' licence here) put them off. The theory end was the real hurdle and that discouraged them.

The point is that the bandplan STILL has the CW only sections - all the WARC agreement did was allow anyone who didn't have proficiency with a key to operate on the other sections. It didn't stop Morse (there's still as much around as there was, but how much of it is computer generated and how much is 'fist' is a good question that I ain't qualified to answer).

Bear in mind tho - how many are using Pactor and RTTY as well as SSB and never touched a key once they got the tests out of the way?

Well, that's why I gave up the stuff years ago Daithi :D:) Yeah---"CD". They have a program that you can write in text and then it will translate it into Morris code. Then you can burn it to "CD". Now that's getting to be about as ancient as I can think of.

That's what the "G"s used to use before semaphore, isn't it?
