Playback doesn't start at very beginning

JimTaylor61

Question

When playing a DVD (on Sony DVD Player), after download & burn, DVD program goes from Title page and then 'fades' into program content which is approximately 30-45 seconds into recorded program. If use back arrow, I can take content back to very opening of the program (thus indicating it actually got recorded.)

Am I missing something in the optional settings? Advice appreciated. Jim Taylor

Demographics - MacPro; Mac OS 10.4.8; Toast 8; Popcorn 2

1. Record program on TiVo

2. Transfer TiVo program to MacPro

3. Create Disk Image of TiVo program with Title page, etc.

4. Burn DVD-R using Popcorn 2 - to allow file compresssion when needed to fit 4.7 GB disk

5. Play DVD on Sony DVD player, opens at Title page, but then 'jumps' to 30-45 seconds into program

Thoughts? Thanks

Is this happening when you play the DVD on your Mac as well as on a standalone player? I don't recall anyone having this issue previously so I'm thinking it may be a problem that the Sony player is having with the brand of media you are using. Burning at a slower speed may resolve this. Try a different brand of discs, such as Verbatim.

You hit the nail on the head. The DVD plays fine using either DVD Player or VLC on a MacBook Pro. The disk I just tried was burned on a Sony DVD-R. When I put the same disk into the Sony DVD player, the very beginning of the program played OK, but it then jumped 30-45 seconds.

Perhaps my problem is the way the recording is transitioning from the title segment to the first program segment. Is there a Toast (or Popcorn) setting I am overlooking or perhaps misinterpreting?

Thanks...Jim Taylor

I was just wondering why you used Popcorn 2 and not Toast 8 to burn? You can compress to fit with Toast.

What speed did you burn?

Do you know how much compression it had to do?

Bottom line - I guess I'd chalk it up to unfamiliarity with Toast's capabilities. Being able to 'control' compression didn't jump out at me in Toast documentation; and description of Popcorn's ability to compress files caught my eye, thus I acquired Popcorn - as I knew I had several programs that were too large (as recorded) to fit on a 4.7 GB DVD disk.

Speed - I didn't attempt to set or change burning speed, thus it must have 'defaulted' to either software setting or capability of the DVD disk. Some of my recent burns were to Apple-branded 2X DVD disks.

How much compression - At least two of my recent burns were of files between 5.0 and 5.5 GB in size.

Having provided this info, any thoughts on why I don't start viewing at the beginning of the recording?

Thanks.....Jim
