I did a Win98 upgrade to XP as a curiosity. It worked, mostly… It took a lot of little permission fixing and still had a few unresolved issues. Nothing serious but nagging little things.

Eventually I replaced the HD and used that to opportunity to do a Clean install with the same XP disc. The result was night and day. It performed as expected from day one on!

I had a similar experience with Win95 upgraded to Win98.

If I were going to upgrade to Vista, why would expect anything different??? I would do a format and install Vista and never think about it again!

I tried all the suggestions except for removing the drives from Device Manager. I finally did a few restore points. None of them worked,so I went back to yesterday's restore point. The drives are now being seen, EMC 8 is still on my computer. I will wait til those folks at Roxio get their act together for EMC9. I bought it because it said.....VISTA READY, which was an outright lie on their part. I'll keep checking back to see if they have their ducks in a row so I can install EMC 9 Suite that I paid good money for.

Hi Granny61,

Can you help us understand the steps that you took? I'm guessing that your machine was running XP and you upgraded to Vista. Is this right? Did you uninstall EMC 8 before you upgraded to Vista? Did you try to install EMC 9 before or after upgrading to Vista? Are you now running EMC 8 on Vista?

Up to now everything that I installed that claimed it worked on Vista 64 works fine.

Is anyone from Roxio reading these threads? Yesterday I spent a total of two (2) hours on hold for 15 minutes on the phone with a rep who at the end told me that they would send me an email and update my case online NONE of which happened..... I am starting to get frustrated with Roxio/Sonic. If I don't get some sort of answer like "No it doesn't work on Vista 64 and we don't know when it will" or " Yes it works and here is the fix" today, I am going to return my EMC9 and buy Nero which I understand from Microsoft works on Vista 64.

Yes, that is the tone of a frustrated customer (as of right now).

Roxio people do drop in here, but I am not sure if they do on a daily basis. As far as Vista goes, I will probably wait a couple of years, before I even think about upgrading from XP.

First of all, iof you were promised an e-mail which didn't arrive, I'd strongly recommend you check your spam filters. It wouldn't be the first time one went totally astray that way.

Vista 64? It's almost certain you WILL have a LOT of problems with that. Vista 32 is still causing problems in a lot of areas (hence the flurry of MS updates being issued). 64, being the lesser used variant, will be slower. Believe me - I had XP 64 and had to wait 3 MONTHS before I could use my Epson printer on that.

Also - may I ask just what relevance you think your problem has with the original poster who installed Vista 32 as an 'upgrade' over XP?

I upgraded from XP Home to Vista Premium (I chose the in place install instead of a clean install even though I have the full version of Vista) without uninstalling anything. The installation took 2 1/2 hours with no problems.

The Upgrade Advisor didn't report any problems except for some Sonic things which I didn't use anyway. I wasn't getting any of those DLA error messages either. I purchased the "Vista ready" EMC 9 Suite. I uninstalled EMC 8 Suite and did the EMC 9 install.

I put the Contents disk in to install it and it said I needed to reboot before installing content disk.

Well, when I rebooted that was when the problem started. I never got the contents disk installed because none of my drives would work. So, I did a restore to the point of "before removing EMC 8". The system restarted and the drives were not even showing up.

I ended up calling Dell tech support since my hardware is still under warranty to find out how to get the drives back. I was told not to remove the drives from the Device Manager.

While chatting with tech support (Dell) they told me to go back further to a restore point. I went back to earlier in the day before I even did anything at all. System rebooted and the drives were back and in working order. For the time being, I've left it at that. I'm not going to press my luck. I'll keep EMC 8 on my system til the proper drives come out for EMC 9.

First of all - EMC8 is NOT Vista compatible - if Dell told you otherwise they are wrong. Both Roxio and Microsoft say that it isn't.

The DLA problem with 9 is being worked on - hopefully a fix will be along soon.

The advice on removing drives from System, Device manager is standard and I'm extremely surprised a 'tech' told you not to do this. Any qualified tech would say the opposite. All you are doing in that is removing the link. When Windows reboots it automatically checks for a hardware change, it will see the drive and reconnect it. There are NO drivers used - simply a drive detection. It does NOT physically remove the drive or cause it any damage.

Installing any OS as an 'upgrade' is also very problematic - there are always older components left on the drive. It's far better to do a reformat and re-install so that you have a 'clean' system with no hangovers from the old one (and believe me, after using any OS for 6 months or more, there is a LOT of garbage collected in the registry and so on). All you have to do after a clean install is to load up drivers where needed (esapecially sound and video for EMC) and also download and install the latest DirectX from MS (this does NOT go in under the normal 'updating' but has to be manually done. Then re-install the programs. That way everything is fresh, up to date and you don't have any lurking remnants of the old system that may pop up at some stage

:) Just installed EMC9 after removal of EMC8. When I rebooted so that I could install the Content CD, both my drives are not being seen. NO---DVD or CD burner either. Help!

Try removing the drives in device manager and rebooting and see if that helps.

I have encountered the "No Drive Detected" problem after doing a an upgrade to Vista over a clean install of XP. Vista is correctly seeing the drives now, but didn't originally when I installed EMC9.

Should I uninstall and reinstall or wait for the promised fix?

If it can see the drives, I'd leave it as is - any patch will be for programs already installed (you can't patch what isn't there)

I'd still advise against installing any OS on top of an existing one - it's a recipe for disaster really as partys of the old OS tend to hang in there and won't go away

And, if that doesn't work, try the following:

Now if you'd said at the start you had Vista we'd have told you that there is a problem there - there is a patch due out to overcome some changes MS made with the Vista update patches. When it will be is anyone's guess really as it's still being worked on

Granny61,

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree with Daithi that the "upgrade in place" method is not the preferred way to go. It's much better to install Vista on a clean system, then install your software programs. Since EMC8 is not supported on Vista, it would have been preferable if you had removed EMC8 prior to upgrading.

If you are willing and able to do it, a clean install of Vista would solve the problem. Are you able to back up all of your files? Would you be able to re-install all of your programs?

I just installed EMC9 on a brand new Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit and got the exact same error. I know how to restore my drives (by removing the lower filters in the registry) but I want EMC9 to work as advertised. I am extremely frustrated because I bought this product two days ago specifically for my 64 bit Vista AFTER reading that it was compatible.

Does anyone know how to get this to work?

The only thing worse than installing Vista is installing Vista 64. Do ALL of your other programs work with it? I really am curious, since tone inflections can't be heard in posts.

That and the fact that she won't follow directions. I tried all the suggestions except for removing the drives from Device Manager.

Heading off to make a new entry to the ignore list. :)

I chose the in-place upgrade because my computer is less than a year old. No one uses it except me and it is not all trashed up with the usual junk that gets on computers when everyone has access to it. The upgrade went fine. Prior to installing Vista, I removed all the Sonic things that were in the control panel and I also edited the registry to remove any and all Sonic Keys and subkeys. Roxio EMC 8 was working (including the drag to disk function). My problem arose when I removed one version and installed the newer version.

I have disks or backups for all my installed software. I just didn't want to go through having to load the software again, locate all the newest drivers for hardware.

I do appreciate the help from this forum!!! As for the Dell tech support telling me not to remove the devices.....it was an online chat support with Dell and it's quite possible the person was probably in India.

The whole point of a clean upgrade is to get rid of all the old registry, with its program keys and so on - an 'in situ' upgrade won't do that and there will still be odd bits of XP and incompatible stuff floating around.

The fact that you have only had it for a year and no-one else uses it is a bit of a red herring really. No-one else uses mine but I'd still do a wipe, reformat and re-install of XP about every 6 months to clear out all the clutter that builds up.

Regarding drivers - I usually keep those separately from my main (OS) drive and do keep them updated so when I do the reformat, I have them handy.

Honestly - a clean install is always better than a patched one
