Samsung SH-W08A and Sony +R

John T Smith

Question

Samsung SH-W08A dual format drive with their latest 1S31 firmware

Sony +R discs Ver 1.3 - 1x-16x (printed on the hub)

I've had Roxio 9 check for software updates... already up to date

Roxio 9 will not recognize the discs at all (-R work just fine) so I'm wondering if this is something Roxio needs to fix in a future update, or if those discs are just not compatible (most likely due to speed?) with the Samsung drive?

I am not sure if any Pioneer burners support book type. I got that same burner for my son, about 9 months ago, and it has been a good burner for him, though.

The 111D by default is DVD-ROM for DVD+R DL stock firmware. DVD-ROM book type on single layer DVD+R. For that, you will need the dangerous bros!

To me that's more a problem with the drive firmware than anything else

Disc type, capacity and speed are read by the firmware which tells the software what it is.

That's why the old type 'driver database' is no longer in use as the firmware dynamically reads an info track on each blank to determine what it is. Failure to recognise a specific brand will be down to fiirmware - sorry

I checked the Samsung file - normally most drive makers add a list of supported media but Samsung hasn't bothered. btw, it says their latest is 1S31A

You are correct on that, CD, but I was talking about the DVD+R. I didn't do the hacked firmware for my son's burner, but I would if it was mine. :)

Will pm you.

Hmm... according to Samsung's support site

http://www.samsung.com/support/productsupp...M&language=

The driver they have is 1S31 - so my drive has the latest firmware dated 7-13-05

(I flashed my 1S30 via their download so the drive is now 1S31 firmware)

Oh well... the -R discs I have work, so maybe one of these days I'll look at buying a different, newer drive (this one is about 2 years old) and will also switch to Pioneer

DVD players are very pernickety creatures - what works in one mightn't work in another. I've a cheap and cheerful player here made by A.Non of somewhere in Asia which happily plays anything you feed it - my sis-in-law's top-end box on the other hand won't play half the stuff - figure that out :)

I googled round a bit on that Samsung drive - seem to be quite a few problems with it

Grin... maybe I'll buy a new Pioneer "sooner" rather than "later" to have full dual format capability

Previous computer had Pioneer (only -R back then) and I never had any problems

Only problem NOW is the Samsung won't work with at least this one brand/model of +R drive... but maybe it's time to check out the latest Pioneer dual format drive

Looks like I'll get a Pioneer DVR-111D to replace the Samsung... only bad comment I found was that it is not very fast in Linux, but since I use WinXp that is not a factor for me

Compatibility with older set top burners, when using DVD+R media, would be the only POSSIBLE issue, with that burner.
