Transfer halted halfway through (New Thread)

Bmurray

Question

It is apparent that many users are seeing their TiVo transfers halting about half way through completion. This happens without an error message and leaves the user with no options but to manually stop and restart the transfer. Many have said that the second attempts will halt about half way through as well, but not in exactly the same place it halted the first time.

There is a known issue (Channel changing issue) that TiVo is aware of and is working on currently. This halting issue is NOT related to the channel changing issue as it has been described.

Please post here if you are experiencing this exact issue.

What is Roxio's stance on this particular issue? (Not the channel changing issue)

thanks

I have to admit that I don't use the tivotransfer too much on my macbook- but what I CAN say is that I don't think that this is limited to the mac version.

I have tivodesktop installed on a couple of windows xp machines, and they have the same problems.

I'm sure this has been covered before but thought I'd post it anyway.

I realize this does nothing to fix the issue. However, I have found a reliable work-around and that is to use a download manager such as Speed Download (mainly because of the resumable download feature) along with the TiVo web interface to manually download the programs to my hard drive. I then take the downloaded .tivo files and move them to the TiVo Recordings folder in my Documents folder and can use them with Toast.

I've had a 100% success rate with this method where as a near 100% failure rate using the Roxio software. Again, this doesn't fix the problem, but it is a temporary solution.

To access the TiVo web interface, your TiVo must be connected to your local network. Using Apple's Safari I use the Bonjour feature in my bookmarks to connect to my TiVos. You'll get some kind of generic message that says you are connected to the TiVo. Now change the http:// to https:// and add /nowplaying/index.html to the end of the URL to connect to your Now Playing list. It should look something like this:

https://dvr-XXX.local/nowplaying/index.html

where XXX is your part of your TiVo's serial number you then login with the username as "tivo" and the password is your Media Access Key.

Hope this helps...

I am noticing the halting behavior on this machine:

Machine Name: Power Mac G5

Machine Model: PowerMac7,3

CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)

Number Of CPUs: 2

CPU Speed: 2.5 GHz

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Memory: 3.5 GB

Same here, the information release from Roxio said it is on the Tivo side of the software. Well Tivos last update to my Tivo machine left me and many others unable to use the front input jacks on our machines. They have yet to accept knowledge or a work around. So please don't hold your breath for a quick fix on this issue.

I too am having the transfer from hell problem. After owning this program for a month, I am still unable to fully transfer a program without it stopping half-way thru. What a waste of money!!!! I am incredibly angry and Roxio for putting out this piece of crap!!

Roxio, if you are reading this, give me a call so we can arrange for me to get my money back!!

Hello,

I would like to just put my 2cents in. I am having the same problems with the TivoTo Go Mac software. I just hope that the problem is resolved soon. I am using the series 2 box with the wireless USB adaptor. I get the same results with my G4 laptop as well as with my Emac machine. The transfer process is slow enough. I paid good money for this software and expect it to work as advertised! Is it working for anybody?

I was having this same problem. In fact, I not once was able to transfer a program to my Mac. Then I tried TIVO's wireless adapter, which I picked up at Best Buy for about $60. Now it works every time. I've transferred many programs over to my Mac and then I convert the shows to a format for my iPod. It's a but cumbersome, but it works.

I'm definately having this problem with Toast/TivoToGo on my Intel-based Mac Mini (and Tivo Series 2).

Almost 100% of the transfers halt partway through the transfer. If I have a queue of transfers, the whole queue must be re-created. Then, of course, it fails again at some point.

I'm skeptical that this is a Tivo-side problem because TivoDecodeManager works reliably for me. But it is slower than Toast/TivoToGo and lacks some features that Toast/TivoToGo has (such auto transfers - which would be nice if it actually worked without xfers choking halfway through).

I wish Roxio would get on top of this bug. Seems obvious that a ton of people are having the same problem!

This problem happens to me about 50% of the time and the transfer can halt at any point, not just halfway. I have noticed that when it occurs, if I check the TiVo from which I am transferring, it is restarting (you know, showing that obnoxious cartoon with the TiVo character) every time. I don't know if the process of transferring is causing it to restart or not, but when it doesn't restart, the transfer seems to work to completion.

Hi Folks-

I'm experiencing the same problem and symptoms: transfers halt part way through, and when that happens, the next time I use my TiVo, it's restarting (showing the cartoon TiVo character).

A bit sad; Mac users waited this long... and looks like we'll wait a bit longer.

My setup: Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet w/ Sonnet Duet 1.3 GB CPU upgrade, Belkin Wireless Adapter connected to TiVo Series2 (non-DT model).

I don't know if Roxio and/or TIVO have figured this out yet, but I want to offer a bit of data that will tell them where one of the possible causes of the halted transfers is occuring . . .

My setup:

Dish satellite receiver hooked up to Series 2 TIVO

I too have been experiencing the halted transfers. This is *not* the channel change problem that has been described in these forums - I've had this occur when I know no channel changes have made.

In my case, when a file fails to transfer, it always happens at the same place on any given problematic program.

Using the Toast Video Player on the partially transferred program, I can determine the exact time within the program at which the transfer stopped. If I then go to my TIVO, and observe that moment in the recorded show, I generally find some sort of video glitch occuring at that point. The TIVO can get past that point (usually) - it stutters for a moment, you get some macroblocking distorted video, but then it recovers. But I believe it is that glitch that is aborting the file transfer. My guess is that the discontinuity that I'm seeing as a brief video stutter when I view the program on the TIVO is a momentary data loss (perhaps induced by my video source, i.e. the DISH satellite decoder) that the TIVO somehow flags as the end of the file, and then it aborts the transfer.

I know this is a TIVO-side error, not a Roxio error, because when I use the Connect-to-TIVO-Directly-Using-Safari trick (see thread 17339), the Safari-controlled file transfer fails at the same exact point. As this method uses no Roxio software, clearly it is the TIVO at fault for aborting the transfer when it hits the glitch.

However, Roxio has a greater ability than do I to get TIVO Corp's attention, so I offer this tidbit in the hope that it might lead the two of them to work out the problem. The TIVO software needs to be smart enough to continue a transfer through the dropout point up until the full known size of the file. And because Roxio will have to figure out how their encoding software will deal with such a dropout, I suspect they will end up being involved in a fix one way or another. I don't know how Roxio's encoding software might deal with such a dropout, but I'd hope that it would just create a momentary stutter akin to what is seen when the TIVO box encounters it.

I've had the problem with the incomplete transfers as well and it has happened with the Tivo To Go software as well as doing it from Safari. This is with a wired connection and on an iMac G5 and the a 24" iMac Inte; and even through a an HP Media Center PCl. So I'm fairly sure it is a problem with Tivo itself rather than Roxio.

And it's quite annoying since it prevents me from using Auto Transfers as the I then have to manually add the stopped transfer a few times until it finally clicks in.

When I can actually SEE my tivo, when I can actually SEE my programs, then I do have this problem of halting or what appears to be stalling without any warning or notice. After a period of time I just stop the transfer and I seem to have a partial download.

I am having the same problem and it is not related to channel changing. I normally attempt to transfer at night. However, when I transfer from my PPC mac the transfer is successful. When I try on my intel mac mini it never completes.

Could it possible be related to harware (intel vs PPC)?

I'm having the same issue on my MacBook, 2Ghz Core Duo when trying to transfer programs from 140 hour Series 2 in my living room. The TiVo and the Mac are connected via WiFi using the TiVo 802.11g Wireless network adapter. I'm experiencing failures about 75% of the time where the transfer will stop and all attempts to resume fail. It is not related to the previously mentioned channel changing issue because I've attempted my transfers at times when my TiVo will not be changing channels.

Of note, I also have a 80 hour DT Series 2 in my bedroom that is connected via Ethernet and have never experienced any transfer problems on the wired TiVo. My initial thought was perhaps it was a problem with the TiVo wireless adapter since the adapter is brand new and bought as a package deal with Toast 8. But I've since ruled that out. I'm now using the web interface to manually transfer programs to my computer and then moving them into Toast 8.

I love TiVo and bought Toast 8 the day it was announced, but I must say I am sorely disappointed in the product all the way around. I had a horrible purchasing experience from Roxio, my product shipment was delayed over a month, it takes over 2 hours to encode DVDs on my 3 month old MacBook and hours to encode shows for my iPod, and even then the quality is less than ideal. I'm seriously considering contacting Roxio and requesting a refund and return of the product. I'm hopeful there will be an update soon to address some of these issues.

This problem has happened to me, as well.

I've tried to transfer a program four times--it hung in the middle each time.

I have a PowerBook G4 1.67 PowerPC

1GB RAM

Running OSX 10.4.8--all updates have been installed.

So, to the Roxio people. If you do read this, there's my info, in case you're exploring the idea that this is not TiVo's fault. Either way, that old thread went up over a month ago and the problem still exists.

As with many people, while I certainly like Toast--the ONLY reason I purchased it was to get TiVo to Go. So, please address this issue.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Oh boy am I seeing this. I will add that it appears to screw up my Tivo's connection to the network as well. After several failed attempts, my Tivo can no longer connect to the network and I start missing updates to my tv schedule and I miss my vlogs (cnet and Rocket Boom).

FWIW, I didn't have this problem until i did the 8.0 to 8.0.1.

MacBook Pro 2GHz

2GB RAM

OSX 10.4.9

I'm having the same problem. I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 Core 2 Duo, a D-Link router, and the TIVO wireless G adapter. I bought Toast for the Tivotogo functionality, and it's halting about half way through transfers. I've noticed that TIVO resets itself during the transfer. I've been successful in transferring small files from TIVO, but unsuccessful on the same 1.6 GB file. What's the point of this if it doesn't work?
