Thanks, KrisG Hi sknis, Thanks for the reply. I am using Roxio Creator 8 Suite Home Version 3.0.0. I had some old VHS Home Movie Tapes that I got someone to convert to DVDs for me. Now I just want to import clips from the DVD and save them on my hard drive to watch on my PC from time to time. Everything works fine, since I have managed to import the clips successfully using MPEG, WMV & DivX. I was just interested in knowing which format gave the best quality. The "Cature Settings" does not give me an AVI option. I do get an MPEG option, but it just says MPEG and not MPEG 2. MPEG give me the smallest file size for the same clip, WMV the largest file size. I had assumed the larger the file, the better the quality.
mmaxson
Hello, I would like to be able to do the same thing as Kris G. with our old 8mm's that were transferred onto a DVD. My problem is that I can't even get to the Capture/Import function. When I click on it, the program flashes and reverts back to the main Home screen. This has been extremely frustrating. I am using EMC 8, version 3.0 with the update. My ultimate goal with this whole thing is to be able to create a DVD with music, transitions, overlays, etc. That is, of course, if I can keep it from locking up as well - another issue. But first I need to be able to get this imported. My laptop is a Compaq Presario R3320 with an Intel Pentium 4 - 3.00 GHz processor Memory: 1.25 Gb Video card: ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP (last update was in '04 and nothing new in the works for it) Hardware & firmware are updated (as of '06 - nothing newer out) Using EZ Armor AV (disabled it to see if the captuer/import would work - it still didn't) Disable the Spam Guard too but same as above. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, mmaxson

I had assumed the larger the file, the better the quality. Then they are already mpg in the form of vob files. Import those as mpg and you should not experience any losses. vob is the extension used in DVD Movies but in reality, they are mpg files.

Thanks, KrisG What version of EMC 8 do you have? mpeg 2 would be the best of the above if you are going to do any editing. Normally you would "capture" as an AVI file and then edit from there. I'm suggesting mpg2 because I assume that you are going to want to edit the videos and burn them back to a DVD. If you can't do it as avi, then the mpg2 would be better because most of it would not have to be re-encoded when you are burning to a DVD. If you are planning to do something else, post back.
