MYDVD 9 Output Files are Smaller then what the project states!

Question

Hello All,

Recently I've been trying to convert my Windows MCE Files to dvd. I have a show that I recorded recently called Game ON: The Unauthorized Video Game History on MSNBC around XMAS Time. I opened up MYDVD and imported the dvr-ms file right in. It did a convert to mpeg first which was fine with me. (whew and the audio was still in sync). I did notice that the dvr-ms file was reduced by as much as 1 gig when going from the DVR-MS to MPEG. Little concerned but I couldn't see the difference in quality so I didn't sweat it. Next I edited the movie inside MYDVD to cut out commercials and to trim the beginning and ending a bit to get just what I wanted. My finished file was about 1hr and 27minutes. Too much to fit on a 4.7GB dvd-r as HQ but more then small enough to fit on a DVD-R as SP. I tried it with fit to disc just to be safe and with the hope that I would get the best possible quality on a single layer disc. Output file was projected in on the bottom of the MYDVD window to be 4674.6MB with 25.4MB left over. I ran the burn command and the output file ended up being 3.76GB instead. Considerably smaller in size to the projected 4674.6MB. Next I did SP output and got the same size file Seemed that no matter what I tried I was going to get a 3.76GB file. Frustrated and not sure what to try next I changed the project setting to dual layer 8.5GB and marked the output as HQ. I also went into the project settings and made sure it was set to 720x480 resolution, and 9mb encoding bit rate. Finally I was able to get the output file to 4.11GB in iso form. Closer to the 4674.6MB that was projected earlier. That said I am concerned that if in the future I would actually need to fit to disc and squeeze say a 2.5 hr movie to the 2hr limit on dvd-r in sp mode, that It may not give me an acurate result in the output form. Is there any ideas as to what the projectected output size is so much off and why when I encode a 1.5hr movie using the HQ Dual Layer settings which should have been over 5gig is still coming out 4.11GB. This seems awful strange to me and I am not sure If it is something I'm doing wrong (or not) or a bug in the software. Please help me if you know what is going on.

Actually, file size does not mean a lot, so don't be concerned with it. When it comes to video the length in time, of the video, is what controls.

A good rule of thumb is 1 hour of video, at high quality, for one standard 4.7GB DVD.
