You apply the hotfix package that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 916089. Then, you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update. In this scenario, the Svchost.exe process that runs Windows Update stops responding. Additionally, you receive an access violation. This access violation stops the Server services and the Workstation service. That would probably depend on the processor. I would think it'd take longer with the 1GHz P3 on the Win2K than the 2.4GHz Celeron on the WinXP ... But I'm not crazy enough to be doing anything else while it does its thing. I have it set to NEVER do auto-update, and I specificly go there each month and let it do its thing on its own terms.
