C++ Runtime Error - multiple applications dead

sprogger

Question

Friends,

Am an infrequent user of EMC8 and am not sure when this started but for a while now I have been getting this message on startup

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program:....\RoxWatchTray.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Was not too concerned until this week when I tried to start Photosuite and get the same error as above

I saw in the forums that the recommendation is NOT to run Windows Media Player 11 or Windows Internet Explorer 7 with EMC8 both of which I had installed (have autoupdate on for Windows) ... I have since de-installed both Media 11 (am now back on 10) and Int Explorer (back to V6)

Still no joy ....

I have tested a number of applications and have the following problems

RoxWatchTray/Photosuite/Media Import all fail with the above C++ error

MyDVD/VideoWave give me "Error: Unable to load skin"

MultiPhotoEnhance/Panorama Assistant .. appear to start (appear in running programs but do not display)

Help??? (!!!)

They never were on any update list. MS made fundamental changes to the OS kernel with IE7 - it not only hit Roxio products but a lot of other s/w as well. For some reason they pushed that as a 'critical update;' but later issued a 'tool' to block it from downloading.

Apart from hitting other apps, it is NOT W3C compliant (fails to open up to 25% of existing websites)

WMP11 was never an auto download

Both these are part of Vista - but in that case, the OS kernel is different, and the only Roxio product certified for Vista is EMC9

OK .. Still doesnt help me get this back on the road.. I see from earlier appends that an uninstall/reinstall isnt really the way forward either ...

Any thoughts on next steps (other than reinstalling Widnoze and Roxio)?

There will be no patch for IE7/WMP11 (I doubt if it will even be included for 9 which is flaky with both of them - some installs work, others don't)

Personally, I don't want either of them - WMP is far too tight on DRM and IE7 is very poor as far as W3C compliance goes (I use Firefox and KLite Media Player Classic)

All I can really suggest is you uninstall EMC8, run the MS Clean up utility to make sure it is gone and try a fresh install

Daithi

Fixed..... (but with lots of work)

What I did

I uninstalled EMC 8 (but left both the content and the styles I and II) on the system. By doing this I could get Roxio to work (MyDVD, Photosuite) however ... I couldnt see any of the content or styles. Attempting a re-install of both of them just brought the system to its knees.

So...

I deinstalled everything (EMC plus content plus styles I and II) ...

I then ran the MS Install Cleanup Utility (and guess what there were still instances of Roxio/Sonic apps in the system)...

I then ran the RegSeeker tool to cleanout the registries (and guess what there were still lots of entries in the registry for Roxio/Sonic) ..

Then for good measure ran the roxizap utility

I then did a search of my hard drive and deleted any references to Roxio/Sonic ..

After all that I installed EMC8 (boot) then Content (boot again) then Styles I and II (boot) and it looks like I am back up and running ...

For the record MMCONTI .. I think you have to deinstall IE7, WMP11 and then deinstall ervything to do with EMC8, runthe MS INstall Cleanup Util, then RegSeeker to clean the registry .. see if that works

Think I will leave WMP11 alone for a while

Many thanks for all your help

I typoed with the 9 (too used to answering in EMC9 I suppose) but in 8 it's just RoxWatchTray.exe (you're right there).

Did you install Internet Explorer 7 and/or Media Player 11 by any chance? If so that could be the cause of the problem

Keep us informed

Yes .. as per my original post .. I had installed both IE7 and MP11 ... but after hitting the C++ issue have backed both of those install out .. am now running IE6 and MP10 but problem persists

To Uninstall WMP11 the details are here

"1.

In Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.

If prompted, restart your computer, and then log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

5.

In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.

6.

In the Windows Updates section, click Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, and then click Change/Remove.

To resolve the problem, you can install the Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime. For information about installing the Runtime, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 891122, "Update for Windows Media Digital Rights Management-enabled players."

You can also use System Restore to roll back to the previous version of the Player. For more information about System Restore, see Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur."

Daithi

Thanks for the continued assistance ...

As I said upfront ..

I have de-installed WMP11 and IE7 using the Microsoft technotes . so am back on IE6 and WMP10 ..

It did not do anything . all the same failures (C++) occur ..

In frustration I have now also de-installed Roxio EMC8 but given previous apends about re-installing am not sure I want to do that either ...

Should I be waiting for Roxio to release a patch for IE7/WMP11 on EMC8 or will they force us all to move up to EMC9?

Dear digital guru

I forgot to mention I had read this article.... bit out of my depth but when I look at msconfig-system all of those services are ticked (most have vendor unknown and are stopped if that means anything).. If I change anything in msconfig it changes the startup from General to Selective so I left the services as they are.

Selective is fine - just uncheck RoxWatchTray9 and that should solve the problem. When you reboot you will get a nag screen saying you changed some services - just tell that to go away and don't ask again

All you are doing is stopping Mediawatch from running at boot

There has to be something else going on, I have IE7, WMP 11 and V8 Deluxe on my old slow laptop and they play fine together. As gi7omy said it is hit or miss on where they will work.

I'm real careful about keeping the hard drive clean and defragged and to install programs with the anti-virus off (AVG Free). I don't have a lot of programs on that laptop since it is primarily used for answering V8 questions and for use when I'm encoding on this one. I use System Mechanic to clean the registry; I'm not sure how good a job it does.

OK .. tried that .. I dont have a RoxWatchTray9 (this is EMC8 forum) but I unchecked Roxio Hard Drive Watcher, reboot as requested, come up in Selective mode .. answer all nag screens ..

Photosuite still fails with the C++ error

Not very well - there are reported problems

I am having the same issue, and am very disappointed in what use to be a great piece of software, MyDVD, now being bulkware with a lot of needless issues. Customer support provided me with the same help link which has done anything but cause me to uninstall and reinstall with nothing to show for the efforts.

The 'problems' are with IE7 and WMP11 - hardly fair to blame Roxio on what Microsoft did is it?

Hi mmconti .. glad to know I am not the only one ...

Well ... IE7 and WMP11 both released last year (Oct) .. you would have thought they would be pretty high up on Roxio/Sonic test scenarios?.... (given that Windows autoupdate just installs them anyway so there will be lots of people with problems)..

Just for the record .. I have a second installation of EMC8 running with IE7 but NOT WMP11 which appears to work just fine (I havent tested all the apps)...

IF WMP11 is the cause of the C++ problem whatever it has done, does NOT get backed out when you fallback to WMP10 .. so de-install of EMC and re-install is not likely to fix anything ..
