V 5 and XP...the latest

upgraded my ME to XP and the OEM version of CD Creator 4 won't run of course

Latest I can see from microsoft in December 06 is that XP will run version 5 with patch, but will XP run it with service pack 2 of XP?

It's pointless to buy some new new version like 8 or 9 as my PC doesn't meet the minimum technical specs, have only 64 MB RAM and can't get more

I can buy version 5 or 6 on ebay cheap, guessing v 5 would be better with less memory available, but not if it won't run in XP with the patch

Advice?

When SP2 came out for WinXP, a lot of changes were made.

ECDC 5 can be coaxed to run up thru WinXP SP1, and many have gotten it to run with SP2, but more have not. There are no guarantees, and officially it is not supported.

Thanks, Lynn

Bottom line is I'm now running XP on a machine with only 64 MB RAM (minimum XP will run with)

but I've lost my CD burning capabilities.

Any Advice for getting it going again with Roxio (I guess I ought to stay with them b/c that came as OEM for this computer)???

Hmm ... you didn't make the MISTAKE of using DirectCD, did you?

If so, be advised that there is a powerful .udf reader built into WinXP, and if that can't read it, it is a VERY BAD sign. The info on the recovery programs is included in the FREQUENT ANSWERS post pinned to the top of the Forum (along with install info for ECDC 5 with WinXP - but no guarantee it will work with SP2).

(WinXP with only 64MB RAM ? It may say that here but I found 256 MB to be a bit low and added a 512MB - I'd say 512MB would be a reasonable minimum for the OS.)

I TRIED to run the DirectCD but it wouldn't run, made several coasters for me

It was just the existing DirectCD and EasyCD Creator that came with the original ME machine. I upgraded to XP and those programs were left installed after the upgrade.

If you 'upgraded ME to XP you probably have a load of stuff left in the system registry.

I'd recommend you save your data any way you can, insert the XP disk and reboot. Format the C: drive and let XP do a clean install. If it's an 'upgrade' disc, don't worry - what will happen at some stage is that it will stop and prompt you for the original 9x disc, check that and then continue the XP ibnstall.

Installing a new OS on top of an old one causes more problems than enough

Windows doesn't particularly like being on the slave or secondary drive so the new drive would have to be primary master.

That done, yep, install XP on that and when it prompts for the original CDs, pop it in and wait for it to satisfy itself there actually is an older OS, pop the XP one back in again.

That way you get a clean install (but format the drive to NTFS - don't fall into the trap of setting it to FAT32 just 'because that's what ME was on')

The old drive as slave - no problem, Once installed, go to start, my documents, right click and go to proeprties - chenge the drive letter from C to D and it should then set up the My Docs folder where the old one was on the (new) D: drive

You may have lost the ability to use ECDC, but have you tried the built-in burning capabilities in XP? Drag files you want to your CD-RW drive icon in Windows Explorer. Windows will tell you that you have files waiting to be burned to CD. While it gives the appearance of drag-and-drop writing, it actually queues the files up until you tell it to burn them, then writes a session. You can do Data and Audio CDs this way, without any other CD Burning application installed.

Give it a shot... maybe it'll suffice for now?

The REAL problem here is that 64 MB of RAM. It may be the minimum spec for XP but that would be it - it's not really sufficient to run any apps as well as the OS

I'd seriously consider increasing the RAM if at all possible or rolling back to 98SE if not.
