Media 9 install/uninstall problem

Willieuk

Question

Hi, I am new and looking for some help. I have a newish computer running Windows Media Centre. Recently I purchased Media 9 suite and tried to install it. During the installation, which I think was almost complete, the computer hung for some reason which I am still unsure of. On having a look at the state of the installation I have a Roxio file in my Programs File on the hard drive with fourteen folders which total 69.6MB. The program will not run. Unfortunately, it does not appear in the Windows add/remove program utility, nether does it appear in Windows "Clean install" utility which I downloaded hoping that this would be useful. I can "delete" thirteen of the Roxio folders to the recycle bin, but the last which is titled "DCShellExt.dll" is prevented by Windows. Trying to install over the top has been unsuccessful. Can anyone explain a method of cleaning out the program and allowing me to attempt a clean install. Thanks for your help :)

download and run this to clear any remnants of Roxio from the registry (that's why the dll won't delete)

thanks your suggestion but that is the Windows clean up installer I have already downloaded. Problem is that Roxio does not appear in the installed programs list, so I am unable to use this utility to clean the dll file/folder.

thanks anyway. Willieuk

I think you mean the file DC_ShellExt.dll in C:\Program Files\Roxio\Virtual Drive 9

As you've uninstalled the rest, you could safely delete it using Unlocker, a handy free tool that tells you what is locking the file (which is why you can't delete it) and lets you unlock and delete it.

Did you try simply restarting your PC? Often files that are locked but not really needed become unlocked on restart.

Also did you uninstall all the items in add/remove that a full install of EMC 9 puts there in separate headings?

Roxio drag to Disk

Roxio content 9 (only if you installed the contents CD or installation file)

Roxio easy media creator suite 9

Sightspeed

Xingtone Ringtone maker

Thanks, the unlocker has done the trick. I now have nothing corresponding to Roxio in the program files, nothing in add/remove programs. So I went ahead and tried reinstalling media9 but the Installshield Wizard stopped at "Customer Information", thats the window where you input username, organization, etc. Although the "next>" button highlights when the cursor is moved over it, there is no action when it is clicked. Oh dear!! Maybe there is something still lurking in the registry? Willie and thanks again for everyone's help :)

I've been having a similar problem: hanging up 2/3 of the way thru the install. I was able to kill the reg entries w/o using safe mode and del the progfiles\Roxio and progfiles\common\roxio dirs no problem, but i thought i would mention that i was having the problem because i'm also running xp media center home on a toshiba laptop. I put vista on and was so disappointed in it i removed it and went back to xp, but i had the problem when i installed emc9 both times. i would just recommend making sure you kill all other applications when installing, and even then i've had to try a few times

Nearly every program tells you to close down all other apps when you install - but everybody manages to overlook that (leaving anti-virus, pop up blockers and so on still running).

The regcleaner program I mentioned earlier is an easy way to clean out the entries from a failed install and doesn't need safe mode or anything

One problem with laptops tho (and I have it with mine) is that the graphics capability isn't really up to the job of running EMC9 - it does need a good graphics sub-system (not top of the range but definitely in the mid-range) and the majority of laptops do use shared RAM for graphics (keeps the cost down)

Thanks - glad to see I'm not the only one - I've got exactly the same issues on Install & Uninstall (see other thread) - I'll use the unlocker to delete the stray dll....

Looks like there are a few other issues with the program - which is a pity, as I was looking forward to using the new functionality....

By the way - when I do the install, it tells me that I need to close Windows Explorer (ie, the desktop), in order to do the install - tried that (it does restart itself - thank heavens), still get the same issues.....
