Crashing issues and workarounds

Question

This post relates to various crashes, either Tivo Transfer, OR The Tivo box it self. It relates to Tivo Transfer version 1.0 on os x 10.4.8, and a standard series 2 tivo box.

TIVO TRANSFER CRASH:

If your Tivo Transfer CRASHES shortly after startup and particularly when looking at the list of tivo programs on the DVR, they you may have items in the "recently deleted" folder on the tivo.

Having items in the recently deleted items will cause Tivo Transfer to crash. To fix, remove all items fromhe "recently deleted" folder on your tivo and wait a few minutes, then launch Tivo Transfer again.

INCOMPLETE TRANSFER AND TIVO CRASH

If Tivo transfer has not completed a transfer, and that transfer seems "stuck", it is because the Tivo set top box has crashed in the process.

Performing a transfer with Tivo transfer can cause the Tivo to crash and reboot. the related factors are that the Tivo is in RECORD mode. An additional factor may be that you are viewing a recorded program on the Tivo, while Tivo is recording, and Tivo Transfer is attempting a transfer.

If Tivo crashes while transferring, you must quit Tivo Transfer, and restart it after the Tivo finishes rebooting.

Workarounds:

1) Avoid using Tivo while transferring (other than watching live tv) i.e. don't use pause or other tivo functions.

2) Start transfers with enough time to complete before a scheduled recording begins, and never transfer while Tivo in is record.

3) Take Tivo box and place it behind your left rear tire of your car, start you car's engine, shift into reverse, and backup.

Cheers

Wondering if you can help me - I have no problem transferring (so far), but when i go to "Toast It", it seems to start working fine (gets to around 4% or 5% completed) then my whole computer crashes. Every time.

I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and have tried various types of DVD: DVD-R, DVD-RW, but in both these cases they were Maxell brand DVDs.

It's pretty frustrating; i've loaded the software twice now.

Thanks for any insight!

I have had nothing but crashes on my Tivo box every time I attempt to transfer a recording. I have emptied the Recently Deleted folder. There are is no current recording active.

In the past, I have noticed that if the Tivo box were to change the channel to start or end a recording, that would be the point at which a download would halt. Now it seems much more likely that the system will simply restart.

In some cases, a significant amount of data does get transferred before the Tivo crashes. This is frustrating as I cannot remember a time when I was able to transfer an entire program file successfully.

Having problem that is similar, but not quite what you are posting:

Transferring shows newly recorded on the Tivo to my Mac works just fine, but some shows that I have moved from the mac to the Tivo do not seem to want to come back to the Mac again. When a show has gone from Tivo to mac to Tivo, trying to use Tivo-To-Go to bring that show back to the mac will cause it to drop the transfer after about 4 seconds. Nothing crashes or freezes on either end, it just drops the transfer leaving a partial show, basically the channel change, on the Mac.

I understand this channel changing thing is a known issue, but I'm having a mild case of it from what I'm reading. Only happens for shows that come back to the Tivo from the Mac and try to go back to Mac and even then not every show does this.

I have not had this problem. In fact, I can't think of any time when my TiVo hasn't had dozens of items in the recently deleted folder.
