Transcoding video very slow

Question

Im using MyDVD v6. It seems to take a long time to create the menus and convert the audio and video files before it actually starts burning a video to a dvd. It can take up to an hour to burn a single dvd. Im burning mpeg files that I created using a camcorder. Im only creating a single static menu with 1 button on it to place on the dvd in addition to the video. Clicking the button starts the video. I imported the videos using MyDVD's import feature and my Sony camcorder. My Sony camcorder has a USB cable that I plug into my PC and I play the tape in the camcorder. While the tape plays in the camcorder MyDVD captures the video. Each video is about 3.6gig in size and about 50 - 60 minutes long in playtime. Im burning 1 video per dvd.

My PCs specs..

Dell XPS 410

Windows XP Professional SP2

Pentium Core 2 Duo 1.86 Ghz

1 gig Ram

2 250gig SATA hard drives

2 Internal SATA DVD burners

NVIDIA Video card

I checked to ensure that the DMA access was enabled for the hard drives and it is. I also checked to make sure that the write-back function was enabled for the hard drives. I also disabled my virus scanning and malware scanning software. I tried turning off any screensavers as well.

While MyDVD was performing the file conversions I checked the task manager and it reported that 72% - 80% of the cpu was being utilized. It also reported that 700meg of memory was being utilized. I have some other small processes running in the background but none of them were using any cpu. I would think that MyDVD would use 100% of the available cpu?

Im wondering if anyone knows of anything I can do to speed up the burning of dvds? The actual writing of the dvd doesnt take too long. It seems to be the conversions and transcoding that are taking a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

John

Rendering IS painfully slow unfortunately - on my machine it takes as long to render as the running time of the original file (using My DVD9)

Even Pixar admit that the log-jam they have is render time (and they have a farm of multi-core, high memory machines linked)

The fact the CPU isn't hitting 100% may be down to the dual core taking some of the strain of the OS etc
