Seek, Synch, Atip Or Mechanical Positioning Error 4/09/00

Question

This occurs when trying to burn this one particular file (not on others). File is a PDF 685,542 KB onto an 80 minute CD-R. File is uncorrupted and I have regenerated it several times in several different ways as PDF - always a good generation of the file as PDF, always fails to burn. I have also tried the burn at 16x, upto 48x ... still always fails (CD is rated to 52x).

Keep getting "Seek, synch, ATIP or mechanical positioning error" when trying to burn a data file. Have used PC Doctor to check the drive and it is ok in all regards. Normally don't have problem with Verbatim Silver Inkjet Printable CD-R (have successfully burned 25 out of this current batch) but now all are failing within the first few seconds of write on this file.

Any idea what this error message is telling me (other than here is another coaster?) ...THANKS

That error usually means one of 2 things. Either the burner is on its way out, or it is having trouble with recognizing the media, which could be caused by the media being bad.

You can try 2 things. First, make sure your firmware for the burner is updated. If it is, then go to Device Manager, delete your burner, reboot, and see if the problem is solved.
