DVD-R versus DVD+R

tom1805

Question

At present I use DVD-R for burning videos and DVD+R for backing up data files. However, this is purely because I once read a comment that suggested that this was the best system to use. Is there anything in this claim or does it matter not in slightest what type of DVD I use?

Basically, use whatever works for you

Some DVD players don't like -R, some don't like +R and some don't like RW. There's no hard and fast rule which is 'best'. Once a DVD is burnt it becomes a DVD-ROM as far as the computer is concerned, so for data it doesn't matter. It's only for video use that there may be a problem (and it's not just -R/+R/RW but even the brand of disc that will affect playback on a standalone player

Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!

Booktype field identifies the disc as either a DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W) or a DVD-R(W) disc and is for a big part responsible for the compatibility. Because this setting is overwritten during the DVD-R production process it can’t be modified afterwards, the laser of your DVD recorder simply can’t write to that part of the disc. During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder that can will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.

So after burning a DVD-R, DVD+R, and a DVD+R Booktype changed to DVD-ROM. A disc identifier tool ( DVDinfoPro, Disc Identifer, CDDVDSpeed). The -R Disc & Booktype will be -R, the +R Disc & Booktype will be +R, and the +R Booktype changed to DVD-ROM, will read, Disc +R & Booktype DVD-ROM.

OK - so call it a WORM (original name for optical media - "Write Once Read Many")

The point is that a DVD drive will read media that it has written, irrespective of type.

It is also a fact that set-top players are picky about what they will and won't play

To that end, my original statement of 'if it works, then don't worry' applies

my original statement " Once a DVD is burnt it becomes a DVD-ROM as far as the computer is concerned, so for data it doesn't matter.

Wrong information is just that, wrong! You can put your own spin on this wrong information, but it will never make it right information!

Perhaps you should consider just what the initial letters 'DVD-ROM' actually MEAN

If you wish to nit-pick over every post for some strange reason of your own, that's your concern.

The point of these boards is to be helpful to others - not wage a personal campaign against what you perceive is wronf.
