mpoggg
thanks okay now I see the list of codecs which seems pretty complete--do you have any suggestions on finding out which ones I am missing--I have tried the MS updater for WM to no effect. Yes there different types of avi files and you may need the proper codec to play them on your computer. Some are dv-avi, divx and xvid. A nice free utility to see what codecs you need to play a file on your system is Gspot

When you ran Gspot it should tell you which, if any, you are missing.
mpoggg
thanks again Of course this begs the real question. EMC doesn't recognize these avi files and so I can't burn them to a vcd or dvd. Any help is much appreciated martin When you ran Gspot it should tell you which, if any, you are missing. The idea is if Gspot tells you that you have a missing codec, you download and install the codec and your problem should be gone.
