Captured AVI has Z edges

Video_Killed_The _Radio_Star

Question

Hi,

I have have finally gone digital.

I have a Sony TRV480 (digital 8) and am capturing using I.link (firewire).

The monitoring screen looks fine, however captured avi has what I call Z edges on moving objects. Stationary objects are sharp. I have tried sony's and Roxio's capture software and it's the same.

Does the capture software use the graphics card to render the picture? I have a ATI X600 SE. I know it won't set the heather alight, but!!! I have set the rendering to software, poked around with other settings to no avail.

The real p*sser is that playing it to my DVD recorder and then importing to roxio and then editing, I get better results. So a D->A and A->D, with a codec or 2, somehow is sharper than a D->D, with a codec or 2, or am I missing the point somewhere.

I trying to pin point the problem, any thoughts?

There is no problem. These 'jaggy' edges only appear when viewing INTERLACED video (which ALL consumer camcorders are) on a PROGRESSIVE device like a computer monitor. It seems to be more pronounced on LCDs.

When you used the DVD recorder which is most likely hooked to a TV, the video is being display on an INTERLACED device (the TV).

Try to ignore them. Edit your project and burn it to a DVD RW for testing. Then take that disc and play it back on your TV. The jaggy edges should not be visible.

IF the finally DVD is for computer playback, the you can output as 'progressive'. Check that in MyDVD project settings.

Hi,

Thanks for that. However I have burned it to dvd+rw and the jaggy edges are still there. I must say, though it is better quality using software rendering. It does look like a interlacing problem. The jaggies look like very squashed long Z's.

The final output is DVD for TV (PAL), I don't think that PAL makes any difference. Tonight I will take a still and upload the picture.

My processor has enough oomph. Somehow I think it's my graphics card is the problem. Is there any interlace setting on the card i.e Bob, vecter etc that would help? Or is it a new Graphics Card?
