Empty Folders

Hi,

We have a Western Digital External USB 2.0 hard drive that we use to create back ups and for data storage.

We just discovered that if we copy folders and files to this drive and then try to burn them to a DVD+RW using Creator Classic, we lose files from folders that are within folders.

When we check a disk after burning, the individual files are on the burned disks but where we have folders within folders, the inner folders are all empty.

We have the Roxio software on our computer hard drive.

Does anyone know why this happens.

We are also using Ghost 9.0 to create back ups of our C Drive (with OS) to this external drive but now we are wondering if these back ups contain all of the files from the C Drive.

Thanks for any help.

I can think of two unrelated possibilites that could cause the problem, since you are not very clear about exactly what is happening, i.e., if you can get into some of the files but not others.

(1) If you can get into files to a certain level, then you are running into Joliet limits - Joliet is a standard for burning CDs:

Joliet Standards:

Filename – 64 characters max

Pathname – 128 characters (full path + filename)

8 subdirectories max

4gb file length limit

(2) If you cannot get into any of the files, I suspect you are creating a layout for burning and then burning the layout onto the CD, rather than creating a CD from the layout.

In effect, you are making a list of what you want to keep and saving the list, while tossing out everything on the list.

Or as Digital Guru Brendon T put it, you now have the shopping list rather than the groceries.

(3)One other point: you say you are "backing up" to a DVD-RW. The only thing RW media is good for is permantly losing all data, since the aluminum alloy that is recrystalized will gradually de-rystaliled and all the data will disappear sooner or later - if formatted for Packet-Writing, usually sooner.

If you want to KEEP the data, NEVER format optical media (CD, DVD), and NEVER use RW media.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for the reply.

We can access individual files after burning a DVD+RW disk, but when we try to open folders that were in a folder, they are all empty.

We tried burning the same data to a CD-R and had the same problem.

We checked Project Properties in Creator Classic and found the following in this dialog box:

File system was set on "UDF". The available settings are "UDF", "Joliet" & "ISO9660". What is recommended setting? We have never changed this setting before.

Also in this dialog box, near the bottom, UDF Bridge Support is checked. Should this be checked?

Thanks,

John

P.S. For some reason we did not get an e-mail message that we received a reply to our post. I did check the box for e-mail notification.

Still not a lot to go on forcing us to use a crystal ball…

"Sounds" like you are using Classic since you have the File System option.

Set it to UDF – No Bridge and turn off Validate source files.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks again for the reply.

We did mention, in our original post, that we were using Creator Classic.

Actually we have both Creator Classic 6 & 7 on our computer right now as suggested by TDK.

We have been using Creator Classic 6 most of the time because we haven't really tried to get familar with Creator Classic 7.

The Project Properties I noted before were for CC 6.

The Project Settings for CC 7 are:

File System: UDF102

Bridge: Joliet Bridge

Validate Source Files Before Recording was checked.

I will change settings per your recomenndation and try again.

Thanks.

I don't know about everybody else, but I am having trouble viewing this thread. I answered once but now a couple of the posts have disappeared…

It sounds like you are using Classic but are hitting Joliet limits.

Try a burn using UDF – No Bridge and turn off Verify.

Ghost should take matters into its' own hands and be OK. First rule of any backup is TEST!

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the reply.

As you previously recommended: "Try a burn using UDF – No Bridge and turn off Verify."

I tried this and it worked fine. No more missing files in folders.

Thanks again.
