7 vs. 8 vs. 9?

Michelle B.

Question

Hi,

I would like to know how version 9 is. I had version 7 and really liked it, so much so that I bought version 8 for my sister. She kept telling me about all the problems she was having, and I thought she must be really slow, but then I worked with version 8, and I saw what she was talking about. It was like a dumbed down version of 7, with very little of the cool features I had in 7.

I would like to know if 9 is better worse or the same. I have very limited funds available, so I can't buy it unless I know for sure I will use it.

I have tried three different times to download the trial version of 9, but every time after I go through the whole download and installation rigamarole, it says my 30 day trial version has already expired, so I gave up trying to get that.

Thanks

Michelle

Why don't you tell us a bit about your system. That makes a difference.

I like 9 much but it's not for everyone. What do you plan on using it for? Video, audio---both?

In regard to the trial download - this may sound strange but check the date/time on your computer are correct. Incorrect settings can cause all sorts of strange problems especially with time limited apps

Hi

Thank you for your replies.

I did check the date and time on my computer, and it is right, so I'm not sure why the free trial thing says expired. I figure it must be something I did on accident :)

Please bear with me- I'll try to give you my computer specs as best I can. I'm not really great with tech stuff.

This is what it says on the tower: I have a compaq presario SR1913WM , AMD 64 Athlon, Graphics by NVidia. I know it is Windows XP. I went to My Computer and it says under my C Disk that there is 81.1 GB of free space, with 103 GB total space.

Actually the only problem I am having with version 7 is that after I create a slideshow, when I go to burn it to a CD, it says Videowave has encountered a problem and must close. It does it EVERY time I try to burn a CD. I've tried reinstalling, restarting, and that's about all I know to do. If it wasn't for this problem, I would be very happy with Version 7. I really enjoy working with it!

I previously have used the program to make slideshows with photos and videos for family, but our business wants to have me start doing in-house promotions. They are going to buy some flatscreens and DVD players and place them around the building.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with my computer specs, but thank you in advance for any advice you can pass along. :)

Did your Presario come with any preinstalled software that is similar to Roxio? If so, you might want to remove it first. Did you install IE7? EMC7 is not compatible with it and causes problems.

Beerman: By preinstalled software that is similar- would that be sonic? I do have that. And please forgive my ignorance, but what is IE 7? I know EMC stands for Easy Media Creator, but you lost me on the other one. Sorry.

Sknis: I downloaded the Belarq adviser. I also downloaded the firmware updates. One requires a CD-R to make a bootable disc, but when I try and do it, it won't let me. It says to try another brand of CD-R, so I will have to go to the store tomorrow and get some. The other download says I don't have that particular burner so no update is required. Thanks so much for the help, even if it doesn't work, I am learning quite a bit!

Now, I am going to ask a really dumb question- you asked why I was burning to a CD. I thought I had to burn it to a CD-R. What kind of disc should I be burning to? You said a DVD will work better. What should I get (if I get it to work)? Thanks. :)

I'm not Beerman but to answer your question, IE7 means Internet Explorer version 7.

Aw, shucks.

Burning to a CD as a VCD gives you mpg1 quality. That's pretty bad and fewer and fewer stand alone DVD players will play them.

Burning to a CD as a SVCD gives you mpg2 quality. That the standard so quality is good. The time of the production on a SVCD is about 20 minutes or less. Again fewer stand alone DVD players will not play them.

Burning to a DVD gives you mpg2 quality and one hour of video at best quality. You can put almost two hours on a DVD at a reduced quality (but still better than mpg1). Almost all stand alone players will play a home burned DVD. There are a few exceptions. Once you get into this, you'll want to put more than one slide show in a project and add some video files. The only way to go then is DVD.

The price of DVD blanks is not all that much in cake-boxes (ca. 25 or more). Make sure, in either CD or DVD you are using good quality. You burner manufacturer probably has some recommendations on their web site. Almost everyone has had problems with Memorex. I think everyone has their own favorite. I like Fujifilm make in Japan; not Taiwan.

Go here and make sure you have the latest hardware driver/firmware updates for your computer. There are several for the last part of 2006 including a firmware update for your burner. If you are unsure, get someone to help especially for the firmware for the burner. There is even a utility to tell you what burner and what firmware you have for your burner.

Download and run Belarc Advisor; it is free and will tell you all about your computer and software.

Why are you burning a slide show to a CD? You will get much better results if you burn to a DVD --
