equalizing volume on flac files in toast 8

jlevine31

Question

Hi-....

I'm trying to burn an audio cd from flac files which were made from a vinyl album...for whatever reason, there's a decent volume change from track to track in some of them. Is there a way in toast 8 to even the volume levels on multiple files so that they roughly match? I'm not very familiar with using the eq functions but there looks like their may be a way with that?

Thanks in advance!

Jon

What you are wanting to do is Normalize the tracks. That option is in Toast's Disc menu. I've never tried it with Flac files. It may require AIFF.

Tsantee-

Thanks for the tip...seems it worked nicely. How does it work? I didn't try it in flac but used aiff like you suggested although I may give it a try in flac just to check it out.

Thanks again. :)

Here is an article where Roxio describes the normalize feature in Toast 8.

It came to Toast 8 from Jam 6. This is what was stated in Jam 6 Help.

Normalizing Tracks

To avoid distortion because of high gain levels in a track (or tracks), it is sometimes necessary to set the hottest (loudest) part of a track to a particular decibel (dB) value. This process is called normalizing. You can normalize tracks individually or as a group.

It is a good idea to normalize tracks based on how they were originally recorded. Tracks originally mastered together on the same CD should have similar recording parameters, and can be normalized together.

For example, if you were to add three different tracks from three different CDs to your track list, you should normalize each track by itself because the recording levels on those CDs will have been different. If, however, you have imported three tracks from the same CD, you could normalize those together because they were probably mastered using the same parameters.

• Note: Jam cannot raise the gain more than 12.0 dB. If your sound files require more than a 12.0 dB gain change to reach normalization level, you must use audio editing software such as Peak Express to normalize your files.
