mac os error result code=-39

gd7288

Question

i download video ts files from the net....concert videos...was using toast 6 and 7 previously and have never had aproblem burning these files to a DVD.

after getting toast 8. i cannot burn a single dvd from these types of files. i have tried 8x's with completely different files from different sources. the program multi-plexes just fine as just as it starts to record up comes the mac os error.

what the hell??

i would just go and use my older toast program but i deleted it as soon as i downloaded toast 8.

does anyone know what this error code is?

thankx

I'm guessing now that the extracted video has PCM rather than AC-3 audio. Toast 8 has some bugs regarding use of MPEGs with PCM audio. Maybe that will be addressed in an update.

That would explain why I can't use the Export feature with these titles; I tried exporting to WMV and MOV, but it always hangs in both and I have to cancel the export.

Six of the eight Titles use PCM and the other two are Dolby. I read in another post where someone was able to select Dolby instead of PCM and that resolved the issue, but the titles that have the PCM audio don't allow me to alter the audio in the Edit section. Can you think of any other workaround while we wait for Roxio to fix this?

I have a Quicksilver G4 867 Mhz running 10.3.9 with Toast 6 and just upgarded to 10.5 and then Toast 8.

Today I received the dreaded: mac os error result code=-39, problems burning dvd error message when using the VIDEO option in Toast 8.

I had loaded in 6 MPG files, 4 of which I had used previously to burn a successful DVD, (with menus***), so wasn't expecting any trouble with the two new files as they came from the same source. All were short films.

Did some research, finding this thread. Then had a think and tried an experiment.

It seemed to me that Toast 8 wasn't having trouble with media or burning, but that the message was caused by something in the files that Toast 8 didn't like, and that when it tried to burn the files, that something caused the error. It's just a theory.

Using MPEG STREAMCLIP, (a free download, just google the name), I loaded in the two most recent files which seemed to be the cause of the problem and exported them using the "Convert to MPEG With MP2 Audio" option, which is exactly what they were anyway.

I don't know exactly how doing this changed the files, as I can't find anything different in there stats, BUT, when I tried the Toast 8 project again, using all 6 files, the 4 original, and the 2 new copies of the 2 new files, TOAST 8 multiplexed all the files and then burnt the disc with no trouble.

I played it and it's fine. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but worth a try.

Love to hear back if it does.

I sent another web ticket out last week to see how far Roxio is in addressing the Mac OS error -39 issue, that has not been resolved using version 8.0.1. After a few days a tech closed the case, stating that I should upgrade to version 8.0.1. I just re-opened the ticket. What a great experience this is.

I just experienced the same problem and it is now September. The last post in this thread was in May I think. The problem is still not resolved. I am trying it out on Toast 7. This is the second time in a month I have had to resort to 7. Why upgrade? When 9 comes out I won't upgrade for a long, long time and I will read through the forums thoroughly.

to be even more specific(not that it matters this should be a beta product) the files i download from the net that are convertable to a dvd format using toast 7 but not 8 are VOB files. it multiplexes and then displays the good ole error code -39.

stay away from toast 8 until they get it to the point. it should have been before it was releasedc in the 1st place.

peice of $90.00 audio cd burning program but not dvd files from the net junk

trust me on this one folks

After posting a web ticket with Roxio support on March 9 detailing the Mac OS error -39 issue, I received the following response on 3/21:

"Thank you for Contacting Roxio Technical Support

The issue has been documented and passed on to engineering. We do not have a specific date on when the issue will be fix. When a fix is found, it will be available on our software update page.

Regards,

Roxio Technical Support"

To all reading this, please note the Toast 8.0.1 upgrade does not resolve this issue.

so its official even roxio thinks toast 8 is a piece of crap

Thank you for the information. Toast 7 is out because Toast 8 was my first Roxio purchase. While waiting for Roxio to fix software that shouldn't have been released except as beta, I'll try the other options. I do appreciate the alternative suggestions, and will give them a try.

i 2nd that....my toast 7 worked great for downloaded video from the net....with this piece of junk(an expensive piece of junk) all i can do is burn audio cd's.in a just world we would all get refunds as well as access to a "possible" update. toast 8 is a piece of junk.i appreciate all the attempts to help out there. but gimme a break. shouldnt you just be able to drag the files from where ever on your hard drive and drop them on the toast layout and create a dvd?

i know my files are fine cause i had a friend burn them to a dvd on toast 7 and it went fine...all i get is os error -39 and a little multiplexing.....a piece of crap with a nice sheen

If you have Toast 7 you can use it for exporting. Otherwise you'll need to use a different application for this. Two that I have are MPEG Streamclip and Cinematize 2.

Hello tsantee, thank you for your response. In DVD-Video mode I'm accessing the titles using the correct method: Using the Media Browser loading content direct from the source material, which is an inserted DVD disc. After attempting to burn and receiving the error, I have also tried removing the first and second title to see if that would help. Toast simply begins to multiplex the next available title and I still get the error. Sounds like a bug. Any suggestions?

When you say you used the Media Browser to select the video for adding to Toast, did you either place the VIDEO_TS folder on your desktop and use the DVD setting in the Media Browser to access the titles to extract, or did you extract that same way except from an inserted video DVD disc? Those are the only ways that work. Toast must extract the MPEG video from the VIDEO_TS folder and write it to the Roxio Converted Items folder before it can author a new video DVD. You cannot add content directly from a VIDEO_TS folder to the Toast Video window.

The -39 error only occurs when I try to use the DVD-Video feature, but unless there's another way, that's the selection in Toast I understand I should select to get two or more DVDs with smaller amounts of Video_TS content onto one DVD. In DVD-Video mode I've used the Media Browser loading content direct from the DVD sources. I've also used Add and selected the folder where the TS files are located from the hard drive. In either case the video cues look fine on the DVD-Video page, and I've tried saving via Save as Disc Image to a different (faster) hard drive, but I always get the same result: about 19% - 60% complete, then the error, never getting past "Multiplexing". Any suggestions?

I am also getting the -39 error message when I try to burn to DVD-Video with different brand media that has been 100% successful creating direct VIDEO_TS Folder copies. The same error occurs with Save as Disc Image, so I don't think this is a media issue. The DVD's I am working with are able to be copied using the VIDEO_TS feature.

That error usually happens when the drive is having trouble with the media. I'd try a different brand of media, such as Verbatim. Also, choose Save as Disc Image instead of clicking the burn button. When the disc image is finished, choose it with the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window and burn the disc from it. Let us know if that works.

THX

Ill try it. though ive used 2 different media types(maxell & memorex dl)

ill try the disc save option

portland oregon

I would expect the Maxell discs to work although they, like TDK, aren't the quality they used to be. I've never heard from anyone whose been able to burn to Memorex DL media. The only DL media that people have regular success with is Verbatim DVD+R DL.
