Emc 8 Auto Backup Not Working

keithhubbard

Question

I just purchased a copy of EMC 8 and I can not get the auto backup to work. The manual backup works fine but when I schedule a backup job nothing happens. Does something need to run in the background? The setup is simply and I have read the help files on this subject but nothing works. The backup does not take place at the scheduled time. :)

Never used it but as I recall the backup schedule is just a reminder and requires user interaction.

My OS is XP Professional.

Step 1 - Go to Roxio Backup & set up a new Project.

Step 2 - I named the project & selected files on my C drive

Step 3 - I selected the drive & folder where I want my backup to go (I chose full backup for this first time)

Step 4 - I chose automatic backup to be performed weekly, about 10 minutes from when I set it with a 5 min. warning.

Step 5 - I chose compression but not encryption or validation.

Step 6 - I closed Roxio

Now I wait ...

5 minutes later ... Well, this time it gave me a warning that it was going to start, and it did. However, two things happened. I got a message that it didn't support files larger than 4 G and I have some very large .avi files, but there seemed to be a workaround for that which it was offering. This wouldn't be very useful in an automatic backup since it requires user intervention to proceed. After it started the actually backup, at 2% I got an error message that there was an error -- no explanation as to what caused it. That ended the backup.

I guess I'll stick to Retrospect.

Any idea what the error text was? Is the drive an internal one, or an external? If external, is it connected via USB or Firewire?

The 4gig limit is probably due to file format of the drive you are trying to backup to. I'm guessing it's set to FAT32. If it wa NTFS, than you wouldn't get that file size problem.

No, this software has an AUTOMATIC BACKUP function.:

Automatic backup: Select this if you want the backup to run automatically.

I've got the same problem, which is why I'm looking on this board for help. I'm backing up to a 2nd hard drive which has lots of room; I've looked through the help files for anything I've missed; I've selected Automatic Backup, but nothing happens.

Any suggestions? Do I need to leave EMC8 open in order for the backup to work? There's an icon for Media Management Services showing in my tray at bottom right of the screen so some component of EMC8 is running when I close the program. I had assumed that was what would launch the backup.

Error text -- When I clicked on the Details link, it just gave me an error number. I should have written it down, but I didn't.

I'm backing up to a 200G Maxtor internal drive, and both the drive I am backing up from and to are NTFS.

Thanks for your continued concern.

What you are seeing in the systray has nothing to do with backups. It's for the Media Manager which can monitor you drive(s) folder(s) for media content to catalogue it.

For the backup questions on Auto backups, which backup program is it that's being tried, Roxio Backup or BackupMyPC? There's 2 different ones included, and they do not function the same.

The 4gb limit may be a limitation to Roxio backup. Have you tried Backup MYPC which comes with EMC 8. A far better backup software. I use this all the time to back up a total of 15gb to DVD. Have not tried to a disk drive. It also allows scheduling of backups.

I'm trying to use Roxio Backup. I tried setting a scedule with BackupMyPC but since I don't use a password on my home PC as an administrator, any scheduled backup won't run.

Is that why the Roxio Backup won't run? Do I need to set a password?

I don't have Roxio Backup installed on my V8 installation so I can't check on this.

From V7 Help files, I found this:

"
When:
Lets you set reminders to
help you run
your Backup projects when scheduled, or notify you when a scheduled Backup has been missed.

Set Reminder:
Click this check box to enable reminders for your Backup projects. From the list, click Weekly, Daily, or Monthly to set the frequency of the reminders.

Recur Every:
This section allows you to set specific intervals for your Backup project based on the frequency selected in Set Reminder.

Set Reminder at:
Type or select the time you want to change. Your reminders are sent at the time you specify here."

This is what I was referring to when I said that it is just a reminder and not an auto-run. This is true of V6 and V7 but I cannot say with any certainty that it holds true in V8…

I hope Larry will have the answer to that.

Since I have a setup on one of my partitions that doesn't have a password for my login (which is the admin level), I tried the scheduler with BackupMyPC and got the same problem. Can't schedule it unless I use a password for login. So, on to Roxio Backup.

The Roxio Backup in v7 was like that, as James noted, just a reminder. Fortunately, in v8, it has improved. You have the option of either doing a "Manual" backup or a "Automatic" backup when scheduling it. I tried a small one myself, and was able to get it to run. After opening Roxio Backup, after you select the name of your job, and the target (a hard drive/folder is the best thing to do, as you don;t have to worry about split files across CD or DVD discs), as you go thru the screens after selecting to schedule the job, to set the options, the help files are quite, well helpful on what to set. Try it again and see if you can't get it to work. If not, post back but list the steps in as much detail as you can so we can see if we can replicate what's happening (or not happening).

Also, quick question, are your Operating Systems XP or W2K?
