Why wont the Roxio Creator DE Version: 9.0.116 load appendable data from a DVD. (on Windows Vista)

Question

Why wont the Roxio Creator DE Version: 9.0.116 load appendable data from a DVD. (on Windows Vista) My Options are set to automatically load appendable discs (And I would like to use the disc for more than one recording is the choice I have set.)

When inserting the DVD it reads the disc and decides that it is an appendable dvd with 3.5 GB free.

I then hit data disc, It offers to let me load the contents into the project, I hit yes.

It then tells me I have a data dvd with 699 MB free (which is not true). NOTHING LOADS

I then try load disc, again nothing different happens. It still thinks I have a 699 MB DVD.

If I put the DVD in and the start the program, or start the program and insert the DVD, either way the data will not load.

It seems to do ok with CD's.

I would get a couple of DVD RWs to play with. They come in handy when you want to experiment since you can erase them and reuse them!

Your Classic interface, with Disc Size should look like the picture below.

FYI: Roxio/Sonic wrote the native burning portion for MS which is included in XP and Vista…

I do have some sort of limited version

I live in the sticks, so it will be awhile before I get any DVDRW discs.

I see the properties of my disc are read only. That may be significant? I tried to change them, I don't have permission. That is probably because it is a disc, but Vista does not want anyone to have permission to do anything. Also, I can't reinstall because the program is not on my discs. Thanks for your help.

I just wrote 3 sessions to a DVD-RW without a problem… Ejected after each burn and inserted in a different burner.

Only thing I did notice was that when I started a New Data Disc, it reverts to an "80 min (703 MB)" CD at the bottom of the interface and lists space accordingly. Changing the Disc Size to a "DVD 4.7 GB" and it recalculates the Estimated Free Space.

Of course a Burner must be capable of burning sessions, however most are.

My personal steps in Session writing is to open Classic and choose Data Disc. I set the Disc Size then insert the disc. As soon as the import pops up, I do the import. After that I add what I want and burn. – The sequence of the steps should not matter, it is just an old method I used when the sequence was critical to success.

I assume your PC is pretty new, but even then I would check to see if there is a firmware update to the burner.

All Data CD/DVDs will show in Explore are Read Only. The only ones that won't would be those formatted for Packet Writing. Yet a Data disc not closed, can be written again by an authoring program.

You do not have Classic in your OEM version, but the version you have should work. The disc does not seem to be accessible by Explorer while the programs has it clutches on that drive!

I the picture I added the 1tst.dat file to the disc then switched to another drive and added the 3600 slide test.dmsm file to the same disc. I opened the Options so you could see my settings.

You can also see that it is correctly recognized as a Data DVD. This makes me wonder about the firmware for the drive. I does not appear it is recognizing and correctly reporting the media present.

Could be media too. I think you mentioned Memorex. It is a brand that is best left on the shelf…

Thanks for the reply, I have gone around with this all day. I could try a different DVD, but I am afraid I would waste it also.

I don't think I have a way to set the Disc size??????????????

I am afraid I actually have some sort of trial or Lite EMC 9, do you think so? People keep using the word Classic, I don't see that anywhere. I have a new Dimension E521 from Dell, running Vista. This EMC software was preinstalled. The about says Roxio Creator DE Version: 9.0.116 , but the splash screen says Easy Media Creator 9. The licence says the following, which is clear as mud to me:

Under this Agreement, You are obtaining one of the following three types of licenses: (1) a “Trial License” which will allow you to use the Software or a premium version of the Software including additional features or functionality (“Premium Trial Version”) free of charge, for a limited period of time designated by Sonic for evaluation purposes only; (2) a “Single-User License” which will allow you to use one copy of the Software for Your personal use; or (3) a “Volume License” which is a license granted when You have purchased multiple seats to the Software and which will allow you to use the Software on multiple computers at once.

These are the instructions from the VISTA help section (disc size seems to set automatically). I did all three things in bold, none of them would work.

Using a disc that already contains data

The Data Disc project can be used to add files to an appendable disc that already contains data. To do this you must load the existing files from your disc into your Data Disc project before you record any new files.

If the files are not loaded first, you will not be able to complete your project unless you erase or replace your disc. Your choices will depend on the type of disc you are using. Messages explaining your options will appear on screen as you work.

To load files into a Data Disc project from an appendable disc:

Insert an appendable disc into your recorder drive.

Click on the Load Disc button.

or

Click on the Yes button when a message appears on your screen asking if you would like to load the contents of your disc into the active project.

Note: Some versions of this program include an option to automatically load appendable discs.

I am at a loss, the whole process works fine if I use a CD instead. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

If you did not purchase or download the program, you don't have the "real deal".

Only you would know.

I just said it came preinstalled from Dell on a new Vista Computer. What's to know. I am asking if it is a teaser instead of full version. I want to know why it won't append my DVD's.

It's highly unlikely that it is a full retail version. It's more likely that it's a special "basic" version for Dell, that will have some limitations in it's functionality. Still, you should be able to append to your dvd and import the prior sessions.

The problem is down to either an issue with the drive (firmware), or a bad install/conflict between EMC9/OS/Other software installed. Since you are using Vista, it could be anything causing the problem, even IE 7.

"I am asking if it is a teaser instead of full version."

I'm not sure about your chosen word "Teaser" but the one that comes installed with the Dell is certainly not the "REAL DEAL". I have no idea what the particulars are for the program that you have that came with your Dell computer, but I have done pretty much the same thing that James has done and it works fine for me too.

I tried to find the firmware update (it is a Toshiba/Samsung product) I could not find an update for my burner which is a TSSTCORP TS-H653A. I found a manual, I will look at that. Thanks for the lead, I didn't think of the firmware. I will know to watch for updates.

I am pretty sure it is probably a Vista issue and a limited version of EMC9. I wonder now if I even got the program with my discs from Dell. Thanks for the help from everyone. I may go find some open source software.

And, you will tweak it to make it perfect?
