judyray
I recorded a DVD from TV on my Sony DVD recorder. It works fine in that recorder. But when I take it to the Mac, it shows up only as an empty disk called SONATA_VOLUME Would Toast 8 be able to read this disk? Could I make a new disk from it that would have the proper TS folders so I can use it with the Mac?
tsantee
You should be able to access the video on this DVD by using the Toast Media Browser. Set the top button to DVD. When your Sonata_Volume appears in the lower window you can go to the Titles level by double clicking on it or using the lower button. Then drag the titles you want to the Toast Video window. If you recorded the disc as a video mode DVD you need to finalize it in the Sony recorder before it can be read by Toast. If it is a VR-mode disc then Toast can read it without finalizing. JHRoll
I ran into the same problem -- the only thing that I found to see the disc is "Handbrake". I can then extract the file -- I only did this once several months ago -- but "Handbrake" did the job.
judyray
Does anyone have the same problem? Does Toast 9 or 10 solve it?
tsantee
I doubt if it will be different with a newer version of Toast. You say that the volume shows no contents when opened in the Finder. That shouldn't happen and it is unrelated to Toast. You could try choosing the Copy window in Toast and select the DVD from the Sony recorder. Choose Save as Disc Image. If this works then select the resulting .toast file using the Image File setting in the Copy window and choose Mount It. Does the mounted disc image show a VIDEO_TS folder? I mentioned this before, but did you finalize the DVD in the Sony Recorder?

Toast 7 did not work when I tried it. That is why I am wondering if Toast 8 can do it. I ran into the same problem -- the only thing that I found to see the disc is "Handbrake". I can then extract the file -- I only did this once several months ago -- but "Handbrake" did the job. I did try handbrake. It saw it once, and I was able to get part of the video out. But the next time I tried it, when I wanted to get the whole video, it did not see the files at all. Is this a problem with sony recorders, or others as well?
