Unable to add or import movie

AntiqueComputer

Question

I am trying to import and edit old camcorder data. The data has already been digitized and burned to a DVD by someone else. The DVD in question will play properly under Windows Media Player and PowerDVD. It has 75 minutes of data, in three large .vob files.

I'm trying to use Easy Media Creator 9 on a Dell Dimension 9100 (single core P4 3.0Ghz, 2G memory, 2 large SATA disks). This is my first attempt to use the video tools in Creator.

I've tried importing a disk in Media Import and tried adding a movie in VideoWave and MyDVD. I've copied the DVD to a folder on my hard disk and tried adding that movie to VideoWave. In all cases the software recognizes that there is 75 minutes of data on the DVD. But in all cases I'm actually able to get in and work with only one minute of video.

Media Import produces an output file, either in mpeg or wmv, that's exactly one minute long. The size of the file is obviously inadequate to represent more than that. Both MyDVD and Videowave, in trying to preview the "movie" or the production once the movie has been added, freeze the movie display at 59 seconds plus change. Trying to advance the slider past this point in VideoWave freezes more than the movie display.

The original data was analog, but it's been digitized elsewhere. Is this a different manifestation of the One minute bug I see referenced elsewhere on this forum? Alternatively, am I making a newby mistake that someone can kindly or otherwise point out to me?

Try changing the file extensions of the .VOB files to .mpg, and see if that works.

That appears to work. :D

Grandpabruce, why did you expect this to work? Is this a problem with the device that burned the DVD or is this a problem with the Creator 9 interface? (I ask because there is a stack of other tapes that have yet to be converted.)

Thanks for your assistance.

I am glad that it worked for you. I don't know why it works for some and not others. The solution has been suggested in many threads over the past few years. It does not always work.

I don't think that it is a problem with the device that burned the DVD or the software. lol It is just one of those things. Maybe someone else will drop in with a better answer.

Did you try to just add the .VOB files to VideoWave, without using Capture? They should come in fine.

I used "Add Photo/Video" and added all four .vob files and two .ifo files. That is, the video_ts.vob, video_ts.ifo, the three content .vobs and the associated .ifo file. This did not come in fine.
