catineau
Hi, I have a Dell Ispiron E1705, Core Duo @ 2.0 Ghz, 2 GB memory, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 graphics card. I am running Vista Ultimate. Since installing EMC 9 I can no longer run Windows DreamScene. After approximately 10 seconds DS crashes with the message: Windows DreamScene has encountered an unrecoverable error while decoding the video. If I uninstall EMC, DS will work. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, has a solution been found? Thanks Ron

Mojavekroc
Maybe I am doing it wrong but when I convert the Dreams into WMV, they no longer loop seamlessly. They have a second of black screen. Can someone post how they are doing it. Thanks..
gi7omy
A google search on Dreamscene shows this as the last entry on the windowsblog team's site Microsoft is finalizing testing of Windows DreamScene through a Technical Preview phase. We have made the preview release available on Windows Update. A final release will follow. We have also released additional content, described at the bottom of this post. Stay tuned for more updates. So it does look as if it's STILL in Beta and not released in final. That being the case, problems should be reported to MS as it's almost certain to be a fault in Dreamscene rather than EMC9

Hi Eddieb, My Inspiron 9300 is also widescreen and the wmv files work/look fine. what settings did you use to convert the mpg files into wmv files? The "Destination" format should be WMV9 (I didn't change any options), Just change the output radio button from Disc/DiscImage to File/Folder, then click Save As, select a location, and convert the movie. Drop it onto the "Desktop Background" window, or right click on the new WMV file and select "Set as Desktop Background" HTH
Mojavekroc
Thanks but even when I converted with your instructions which where almost identical to the way I originally did it, the converted dreamscenes have moment of black screen. It might only be a millisecond but it ruins the effect. You don't have any issue with the flicker of blackscreen? If you don't, I wonder why I am having this issue. It would be much better if Roxio would just fix this issue with an update so that we don't have to convert the videos. Does anyone from Roxio read these forums?? Hi, Sorry, I don't have any issues with the WMV files. I have two machines, one running Vista x64 and one with Vista x86. On the x64 machine, strangely enough, there is no problem with EMC and Dreamscence, so I am still using the MS provided MPG files (of course, I have 1000 other problems with EMC 9 under Vista x64 ). Before I posted this as a workaround, I compared each dreamscene on each of the machines (WMVs and MPGs), and they're identical. So, I'm not sure what to say about the delay, except to agree that it would definetly ruin the effect. I also agree that this should be a temporary "workaround". The solution, in the form of updated software, should come from Roxio/Sonic. If I come across anything, I'll let you know.

Mojavekroc
Well, Thanks Lee for your help. I am not sure why I am having this issue. I removed EMC 9 off of my other machine which is Vista x86 too, but maybe if I hadn't removed it I could have seen if it is my PC. I removed it because I hadn't run across this forum and removed it to see if it was causing the issue. Hopefully Sonic/Roxio will fix this unless it's a Microsoft issue I didn't know that DreamScene worked with x64 Vista, I had heard that it didn't. The reason why I hadn't installed Vista x64 is because I had already experienced XP x64 and I knew that drivers and software can be hard to iron out. I actually am still running XP x64 on a Vista x86/ XP x64 dual boot and it works well.
catineau
Are you getting any error message at all when it crashes? It might help to figure out if any part of EMC is causing a conflict. The screen simply goes black with a bubble notification (from the notification area where the clock is) stating that dreamscene has stopped working. If I click on the bubble I get a dialog that says (after clicking the details button): "Windows DreamScene has encountered an unrecoverable error while decoding the video"

Can someone post how they are doing it. Thanks.. Hi, OK, here's the blow by blow for converting one of the "Dream Scene" MPG files to WMV format: 1. From Roxio Home, under "Video", select "Convert Video" (Note - If you're having trouble launching sub apps from Roxio Home, open "Disc Copier" from your "All Programs" menu and select "Video Compilation" 2. The left half of the Disc Copier Video Compilation window is for the "Source" video. Click the "Add Movies" Button and navigate to the file you want to convert (C:\Windows\Web\Windows DreamScene) and select the file. 3. The right half of the Disc Copier Video Compilation window is for the "Destination" video. Select WMV 9 from the "Format" drop down menu 4. Select the "File/Folder" radio button from "Output to" choices. 5. Click the "Options" button - At the top of the "Options" window, there is a textbox with the "Disc Name". The default name is "My Movies". This will be the name of the folder in which the converted video will be created. When you select a location to save the converted video (say the windows DreamScene directory), a new folder will be created (called "My Movies"). If you don't want this extra folder, leave the "Disc Name" textbox blank. 6. Still in the "Options" window - I used the default WMV 9 options, which are: Framerate: 29.97 fps, Output Resolution: Default, Screen Adaptation: Letterbox 7. Close the "Options" window, and click "Save As". Navigate to where you want to save the converted video (C:\Windows\Web\Windows DreamScene) and click "OK" (Clicking "OK" starts the conversion process) That's it. This process produces a WMV file that plays exactly the same as the original MPG file for the 5 Dreamscene MPG files released by MS. HTH
lgbjr
HI, I'm a sucker for punishment! I'm determined to stick with a 64bit OS, so I'm dual-booting Vista Ultimate x64 / XP x64 (and running Vista Ultimate x86 on my laptop). I'm down to two driver problems on XP x64 (Broadcom TPM Chip and an APC fingerprint scanner), plus an additional 2 drivers in Vista X64 (Sentinel USB and Aladdin USB security keys). Dreamscene works fine in Vista x64. Funny thing with EMC; Under Vista x86, there's the always troublesome sonic DLA problem and now this dreamscene issue. Under Vista x64, I think these are the only two things that DO work! Actually, under Vista x64, as long as there's no rendering in the task, EMC works fine (Audio, Labels, Disc Copy, etc.)
Mojavekroc
I am having the same problem after installing EMC 9 on my Vista machine. I even tried it on another one of my PCs and I had the same issue with DreamScene crashing. This was an expensive program and while I am glad that I found the workaround on this forum, I think that Roxio needs to look into fixing this bug. How many people will have this issue and not know that the issue is Roxio related.. Help Roxio! This is too nice of a suite to have this type of an issue. lgbjr
Hi, I had the same problem with Dreamscene on a Dell Inspiron 9300. I never thought it had anything to do with EMC9 though. I did, however, find a workaround that might help you: Use EMC9 to convert the Dreamscene MPG files into WMV files and drop them back into the DreamScene directory (don't recall the exact directory at the moment, but you can actually drag/drop from the "desktop background" window). I just dragged the MPG files onto my desktop, converted them to WMV, and dropped them back into the desktop background window. Dreamscene works great with the WMV files. Mojavekroc
HI, The Dell website has a fix for the DLA problem. It may also hellp other on this too. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/glo...;l=en&s=gen I tried it and it got rid of the issue with DLA but didn't do anything for the other problem.
