Files Won't Play in VideoWve; Play Movie won't start

NBachers

Question

OK, after untold hours late at night, on my days off, and after work, I've finally got a fairly stable install of Easy Media Creator 9. I followed all the instructions for a clean install. Here are my two current problems:

1. I've downloaded films from Archives.org, and other sources. They are mostly MPEG 1- old commercials, promotional videos, cartoons, shorts, etc. I'd like to take portions of these films and incorporate them into a DVD. I can play them in Windows Media Player, Real, and Digital Media Experience (when it will start.) But when I try to open them for editing in VideoWave, only the first little bit loads. They are big files- anywhere from 20 to 305 mb. But, in one case, I can only get the first second to play. As an experiment, I converted the one-second-play file to AVI, and I could play through the entire AVI file in VideoWave. Unfortunately, the video was so pixilated and distorted that it was useless. Any ideas?

2. My second problem: Most of the time, Digital Media Experience won't open. I can get to the DME launch page, but highlighting Music, Pictures, Movies, or DVD just gets a hang. I need to go through several "End Program" cycles in Task Master to even get out of it.

The only programs I've got enabled in Startup are:

AOL

CTF Loader from Microsoft

Epson Printer Status Monitor

NVidia Graphic Card Utility Program

RoxMMTryAppModule

Webworks MFC Application

I removed my NVidia 6600 GT 128 mb video card last week, and installed a PNY GeForce 7600 GS 512 mb, specifically to help with my "Easy" Media Creator woes.

Other system info:

Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 SP2

AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2002 mhz

Asus A8V motherboard

1 gig memory

Video set at 1280 x 1024 with 75 mhz

Hard Drive C: 50 mb total with 47% free (location of EMC 9)

Hard Drive D: 65 mb total with 91% free (C and D are different partitions of the same Maxtor hard drive)

Hard Drive E: 40 mb total; 53% free (E is the location of the video files. I had them in C, but it was taking

up a lot of space. I was having the same problems with the video files in C.)

Samsung Syncmaster 213T 21" flat screen monitor

TDK DVD RW 1280B CD/DVD burner with current drivers

Samsung CD-R/RW SW-216B CD player/burner

Latest DirectX 9 installation from 2/2007

I've put a lot of time, money, and resources into getting all this working, and I'm getting discouraged.

Does anyone have a good video editing suggestion that's not "Easy" Media Creator 9? My hopes for this program are fading fast. What kind of experience have people had in getting refunds?

I hope those are GB and not MB on those hard drives.

I know of archives.com and have downloaded and used some of the stuff posted there. Each file has a use permit on it (permissions). Some you can edit freely, some you can only use and not edit and must give credit, and some is for viewing only. For the ones you want to use, did you check the permissions?

mpg1 files are low quality videos. That is the format on VideoCD. It is not surprising that those videos look "bad" whenever you try to use them in a high quality mpg2 video. They are more suited for small screen WMV files.

As for DME, did you have an earlier version of CinePlayer on your computer? I could not have both and open DME. I had to completely uninstall V8 in order to get DME to run. I'm sure that is also true if you purchased a stand alone version of CinePlayer also.

Yes there are many other video editors out there in the same price range; some good and some bad. In many cases the best one is the one that works the way you think. I own several. I have just upgraded Photoshop 5. Since I got a good deal on the bundle, I also got Essentials 3. It is going to take me a long time to learn that and I haven't found anything in it that EMC 9 doesn't do easier and with a lot better result. I had and used Pinnacle Studio and Ulead VideoStudio and now have Cyberlink Power Director (for special projects on videos from my digital still camera). All did some things well but I still like EMC 9 - I must think the way it thinks! ;)
