Can't Adjust Brightness Of Videos

marklink

Question

In 7.5 I could adjust brightness, saturation, and speed of a video. I can't find any way to do this with EMC 8. The settings is grayed out as we all know. I feel ripped off for buying a product that gives me fewer features.

Maybe I'll have to reinstall 7.5 . Hope this can be done.

Any idea if Roxio is planning on fixing this soon?

Anyone know of a work around?

I don't recall, what version are you running if you go to HELP --> ABOUT in MyDVD?

I had the upgraded version on my last install. This time I stuck to Build 800B85C ENU - I wanted to retain the ability to edit Menu Items with CTRL-R.

I can upgrade if you like.

Just noticed something strange. Pan & Zoom works fine UNTIL I try to adjust the brightness. After I try to adjust brightness the effects of panning and zooming have no effect until about 10 seconds into the clip. That seems very bizarre, but shows that the Brightness and the Zooming problems are related.

Rather odd. I have use the same driver for my Geforce 6200 and have no problems. Makes me wonder if the older Geforce 4 card is not fully supporting DirectX9.

That card does support it and should be working fine. It's the same as I have. Only difference is that I haven't updated to the 81.68 driver yet. Still using the 77.?? one.

Has anything been worked out on this yet? I have an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 440 w/ TV out and I'm having similar problems. I installed the latest nVidia drivers this weekend and it did NOT clear up the problem. I'm using WinXP SP2 (but have only installed it once).

Assuming you're in MyDVD...

a. Right click on the title and choose EDIT MOVIE

b. Now in the storyboard at the bottom, click on one of the boxes which has your video or photo you want (1)

c. Now adjust the settings you want (2)

d. If you want to edit the speed, double click on the movie as it appears in the storyboard (1) and use the slider at the bottom of the video trimmer.

I was able to do a little bit of testing over the weekend myself using the same card. What I have found so far is that when set to "Hardware" mode is when the problem occurs. Try switching to "Software" mode. That seemed to work for me for now until they can look at it some more.

I guess for now I'll switch to software mode to handle the occasional dark clip, render it out and then switch to hardware mode to do my video editing. Sigh.

I don't know whether to wait for a fix from Roxio or to purchase a new video card. Hopefully a new card would solve the problem. Thinking about the Radeon 9550.

Fastest way to change the speed of your video is to right click on the clip in the timeline/storyline and select "Adjust Duration...". Not only is there a slider to to adjust the speed, but there are + and - buttons that increment/decrement the playback speed, and the resultant speed is displayed in a window to the left of the slider. If you want 3x you can also simply type 3 into this window. You will need to go back to the timeline/storyline to see the result of any changes however.

I searched for days trying to find a way to do this and went looking for utilities that would do the job for me. There is a no mention of this facility in the online documentation. I found it by accident and had a big smile for a number of hours; until I found my next hurdle. Enjoy.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

What a simple solution to my problems. Obviously my video card is not completely compatible with Roxio, under Hardware mode. Switching to "Software Mode" cured all my problems. Hopefully others having this problem will read this post.

In the Video Wave program, Select "Tools", then "Options". Select Render Using "Software Mode". Problem fixed.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this problem. I am so happy.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was in VideoWave. I tried this in MyDVD with no change. When I slide the brightness bar as you showed, it has no effect on the brightness. Does it work for you?

Yep, just finished a rather large project with some dark video I brightened up.

If it's not accepting that setting, download and install an updated driver for your video card and that should fix things up... let us know. :)

Good to know it works with your system. I upgraded my video driver last week to clean up another Roxio problem. I must have another problem somewhere.

Don't do that yet... are you available during the day on Friday? Send me a PM with your name and phone number and a link to this thread...

Just for arguments sake, can you download and install/reinstall the driver:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html

Can you try updating to 81.98 and see if it breaks?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html

That sounds like a good offer. Thanks. I'm on the east coast and I'm guessing you are in the west, so I will PM you when I get home from work (that's where my program is running from). It should be mid afternoon for you.

I have done the following:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled NVidia 81.98

2. Uninstalled EMC8

3. Reinstalled EMC 7 and 7.5

4. Reinstalled EMC 8, leaving EMC 7.5 because I like some of its features that EMC 8 doesn't have.

These changes have given me the ability to zoom and pan - which is great!

However, I still cannot change the brightness of the clips.

Another thing that has always happened in EMC8: when the program first loads, the preview screen flickers violently for a second or two before settling down - don't know if that means anything.

Incidently, to help me troubleshoot, I installed EMC8 on my daughter's new Dell1100 (absolute bottom of the line - integrated graphics, etc.). I have complete functionality of EMC8.

Must be something very wrong with the preview screen. When I change the Pan & Zoom, I get results within the dialog box, but not when I preview the production in the main Video Wave window. I can't see how that could be a problem with my video driver.

I may have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall. I hate doing that, but I need EMC and soon for a project.

One possible reason for my troubles is that I reinstalled WindowsXP Service Pack 2 after installing EMC8 --I was having problems with Movie Maker 2.1 That fixed Movie Maker but may have compromisd EMC. I don't know if I was having problems with EMC before I reinstalled SP2.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I'm not jumping up and down for joy....in software mode you lose all of the 3-D transitions. This kind of bums me out - I realize my video card isn't cutting edge, but I'm pretty sure it's fully DirectX compatible. I haven't had any problems with the 3D transitions working ok...just the brighness and contrast.

Has anyone actually rendered out a clip to see if it's just the display that doesn't reflect the changes? I'm going to adjust a dark one tonight and then render it and see what I get. It sucks that I can use all the 3-D stuff with my graphics card but might have to disable it just to get the brightness and contrast adjustments to work.

Gary

You're right Gary, I've lost my 3-D transitions when I went to Software Rendering. Argggh.

On the subject of whether the rendered clips render out properly when they don't show properly in preview, I'm sorry to say that they do not. I'm thinking the program knows that the Brighness effect can't be rendered properly using Hardware and therefore doesn't show it that way in the preview.

Guess I'm back to making a choice of migrating back to EMC 7.5 (which worked beautifully) or upgrading my video card. Anyone want to buy a copy of Roxio EMC 8 (LOL)?

That could be part of it. Just uninstall EMC8, clean the registry and reinstall EMC8. That may help. I use a shareware app called Regseeker. You can search the registry for a single string like 'ROXIO' and delete all entries.

I still occassionally use WMM2 for titling. Just 'save to this computer' using DV AVI and you won't have any trouble using the files in any other editor.

I have the Forceware release 80, v 81.98 (Dec 21 2005).

Still no luck with getting such features as panning, or brightness to have any effect. I can get to the dialogue boxes to make the changes, but they have no effect in the Preview screen or the finished product. I have updated my video driver and installed the update for EMC8.

Can anyone suggest some more things to try? I know I can beat this one with perseverence - just need some help.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that it was the optimal solution because yes, as Gary points out, you loose the ability to use some of the 3D stuff when in software mode. Only wanted to offer the info so if you have to lighten/darken some footage, that's the only way it will currently work with that video card, and so that hopefully when Patrick gets back on here at some point, that they can look into why this is happening.

BTW, when I output in hardware mode, no it does not show up in the resulting file either. Basically, WYSIWYG.
