Creator Classic - Multidisc Problem

rpressjr

Question

Using Creator Classic, I tried to copy my mp3 files to DVDs for storage. Creator Classic told me I would need 4 DVDs. It burned the first disc, and asked for a second. I inserted a new, blank DVD-R from the same spindle as the first one, but after a few seconds it ejected and the request dialog came back. I repeated this 6 times with new discs with the same result.

The drive is a Plextor 8x.

I've done this before with prior versions without this problem on the same hardware. Please advise.

Has a solution been found to this issue --

Wierdly, It seems to be related to verify files option selection (timing). When recording to multiple DVD+R and verify is active .. the 2nd DVD asked is not what was used for the first disk (ergo double sided versus single DVD +R) Since the verify process takes considerable time .. it may also be a timeout issue and a type switch not be set in the software.

When not verifying (using skip selection) -- the multiple DVD+R function works OK.

I have been able to reproduce this problem and solution.

System: Dell 370 2gb RAM - 2-250 GB SATA internal - 1 tr external firewire - XP Pro -

Data Characteristics: Large Photo image files up to 500mb.

Thoughts.

THanks

James: You appear to have misunderstood my posting.

It is useful to be aware of other methods of doing things, but... as I already said: There is a multidisc problem and spending hours in a project only for it to fail half-way is not fun. The individual parts of the software should work independently of it being the best way to do things. Creator Classic shouldn't stop recognising the media after burning 3 discs out of a 7-disc project. It works for you and if it worked for me and for the originator of the thread we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Also I wasn't talking about splitting individual files and I do not think that was the problem with the mp3 files either.

The issue here is that there is a multidisc problem with Creator Classic. And that is what need solving

Of course, there are many ways of doing things but just because we can use BU doesn't mean that the other applications shouldn't work or that we have the space and money to have a stack of HDs.

I put together a 3 disc set with Roxio Backup. It went together without a hitch and restored to a different location without any problems…

I did not use compression and told it not to split files. Of course one file was 4.6gb, so it did have to split that one.

I was actually pretty impressed with Roxio Backup and while I have not had a chance to explore it in detail, I liked the recording structure and the fact that it puts Retrieve.exe on every disk.

You can't just answer "never used a spanned disc project"! What do you do with folders bigger than one DVD?

There is a problem with Craetor Classic. I burned 3 out of 7 DVD+R discs (single layer) when it decided that it needed double layer ones and wouldn't complete the project.

And not is not firmware as I have checked mine (FREECOM_DVDRW DL) and it is up-to-date.

I would never use a spanned disc project for any archive!!!

You may need a firmware update for your burner. It should not be acting like that.

You could practice with some CD-RWs to test it out. (a smaller project needing only 4 CDs)

Oh sure I can say that, because there are better alternatives…

BUMP is included, use that. It was specifically designed to do that sort of thing. Recovery is more involved but how often do we really need to dip into an ‘archive’?

For my own use, I archive important files across my home network to other HDs and keep several HDs on my shelf with old files. (5 last time I counted)

Sandy: I was merely mentioning some of the ways I handle my backups.

It may not be working for you, but point of fact is, the program does work!

Splitting files on any media is not as easy as you might think. I have had it fail on floppies, magnetic tape and optical media enough through the years to know it must be avoided if you truly value your data.

It is your prerogative to ignore that advice but keep in mind that I have lost more data than most people will ever create…

I am experiencing the exact same issue having successfully created a multi-disc set just last week using the same media etc etc - and the only difference was that I have now found and enabled the verify option. I also want to be able to dip into this particular fileset for one or more files occasionally - it should work, obviously a bug.

Guess my options are a) split it up myself and use verification B) switch Verify off and cross my fingers or c) use Backup. Hope this gets fixed soon...
