VideoWave - cannot open files

Duncan Huggett

Question

I am rather new at all this. I wante to burn video saved onto my harddrive from a USB TV source (WinTV from Hauppauge). However, when I try to open the MPEG2 file (which works in Windows Media Player 9 and Windows Movie Maker) by dragging from media selector to the storyline and I get the following message: one or more of the files you are trying to add cannot be edited and have not been added. I have checked using GSpot that I have the right Codecs installed and I have had no problems installing EMC9 or registering components. My PC is a Dell with Celeron 2.4Ghz and 1GB RAM. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the responses. I contacted their live chat and this is a copy of the exchange. I'll let you know how I get on finding a DVB converter:

Chris: Hi! My name is Chris. How may I help you?

you : Trying to open a MPEG2 file (which works in Windows Media Player 9 and Windows Movie Maker) by dragging from media selector to the storyline and I get the following message: one or more of the files you are trying to add cannot be edited and have not been added. The MPEG2 files has been saved to the hard drive from a USB TV source (WinTV from Hauppauge). What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the help. Duncan.

Chris: if it is a non-standard MPEG2 file, you cannot edit it. Please first convert it. Say, if it is a DVB MPEG2 file it is not standard format.

you : Yes - I expect it is DVB format. What do I use to convert it - from what to what? Is there a package in EMC9 that does this for me? Thank you for your help - I feel I am getting somewhere!

Chris: EMC9 has quite a lots of standard codec (encoder/decoder) built in. You need to try and see. In EMC9, there is a software called "Disc Copier". If you have it, you can just run it now. I show you how to do.

you : OK - I will open ECM9

Chris: In Roxio Home, click on the "Home" and then, "Applications". In the "Applications", you see "Disc Copier".

you : OK - Roxio Home open - found disc copier

Chris: after it is up, click on the "Video Compilation" button. Then, you add your movie in. It shows on the left panel. If it crash your program then, Creator cannot handle it.

you : OK - done all that. I have opened the folder where the video is, but it does not appear in the window pane on the right. Am I doing something wrong?

Chris: What is the video file extension? mpg?

you : Hang on - will check - using windows explorer then properties, it says it is a Movie file (mpeg)

Chris: you can drag and drop it to the Disc Copier. Do that way.

you : OK - will try now - Tried dragging it from windows explorer to the right hand pane in media selector but it won't let me 'drop' it

Chris: so, it confirmed that you cannot even convert it with Creator. Please do this. Use google search for "DVB conversion". You need to use 3rd party program to do the conversion.

you : OK - will do that offline. Before I go, Can you tell me what I am converting it to?

Chris: Just MPEG2 (ha ha, funny, right?) but the DVB is not a simple MPEG2. It can include multiple audio and subtitles. That's why it is non-standard.

you : Thank you for your help. I will post this on the discussion forum in case it helps others. Goodbye.

Chris: You are welcome. Bye for now.

I am not sure that you did anything wrong. That Celeron really does not meet the minimum requirements of the software, for doing video work. It is not the same as a 2.4 Ghz P4.

I have gotten that same message that you did, but only when I opened a previous project and had, in the mean time, moved my "source files" from their original location when I saved the project.

Evidently, Roxio remembers the locations of the source files and goes there to find them if you open that project up at a later time. I have since learned to compile all the songs, videos and still images I need for my project in folders and leave them there until I have burnt all the DVD I want and know I am done with that project.

I don't know how this might relate to your problem other than the same type message.

Make sure you are browsing to the actual MPEG movie you want to add.
