EMC 9 DVD codecs

wayne1935

Question

A little background first: XP Pro/SP2 with all updates and patches, WMP11 and IE7 on an Athlon64 3700+ with 2 GB RAM and a nVidia 6200 chip APG 8x video card.

When I first installed EMC 8 on this machine, The CinePlayer did not have the codecs to player commerial DVDs with an earlier version of WMP ( I don't remember if it was 9 or 10 ). I have to install PowerDVD to play the DVDs.

Does EMC 9 and the included CinePlayer have the codecs or am I still going to have to get codecs from somewhere else?

As Terry noted, you get the plugin for WMP to play DVD's from Microsoft. Same applies whether you have EMC 8 or EMC 9 (or any other software for playing dvd's).

Sorry about the confusion. I can play DVDs with CinePlayer but couldn't with WMP because WMP either didn't recognize the codecs or couldn't access the Cineplayer codecs. And at the time I was using IE6 and an earlier version of WMP - 9 but maybe 10.

For WMP to play movies you need a plugin decoder. You can get them from the Microsoft site.WMP will not use the codecs from EMC9 to do it.

Use GSpot (free) to see what codecs you have

According to MS video decoder checkup utility,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

the Cineplayer codec is not compatible with WMP 10 but is with MCE. Unfortunately they have not updated it to show WMP 11 compatibility.

The PowerDVD codecs will be fine with WMP11.

I have PowerDVD 7 player and WMP 11 uses its codecs.

Okay, guys. I received an offer from Roxio for EMC9 that I couldn't refuse; so I downloaded and installed it.

As far as I can tell, WMP11 can use the codecs that come with CinePlayer EMC9 version.

I removed Roxio EMC8 and PowerDVD before installing EMC9. When I put the first commercial DVD in after installing EMC9, a window popped-up asking what program I wanted to use. WMP and CinePlayer were the only DVD player options. I selected WMP and the video played fine in WMP11 and every other DVD automatically played in WMP11.

This doesn't necessarily mean that WMP11 can use the EMC9 codecs, it may just mean that I haven't completely removed some codecs that were previously installed.

CinePlayer in EMC 8 should play commercial dvd's just fine. To activate it's codec use you should only have needed to open it up once. If it's not working, the first thing I would look at is removing IE 7 (then WMP11 if that didn't work), they are known to cause issues with many programs, EMC 8 included.
