Help, I'm having problems with my CD ROM driver

Emma Cherry

Question

I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum, but I'm having problems with my CD ROM driver, there's a little yellow exclamation mark in 'device manager', I've tried unistalling it, my computer is only 9 months old, so surely it can't be broken? I don't know anything about replacing hardware for drivers, or where to find or replace them, if anyone can give me any sort of guidance it would be great, I don't really want to have to buy a new CD ROM.

Thankyou so much.

Also in Device Manager, right click on the drive and go to properties. In the device status box what does it say?If it's not working there should be a trouble shooting button to hit to try and fix it.

This doesn't seem to be a Roxio problem. It's either Hardware or Windows.

Could be it's lost it's driver also.

What kind of computer do you have? If it's one that you bought completely assembled, the computer manufacturer will probably have the drivers and installation instructions on their website..... under Support.

Some manufacturers also have software on their website that will detect problems with the computer hardware.... like a CD ROM.

Of course, if it's truly a CD-ROM and not a CD-RW, you'll only be able to read CDs, not write to them. They're pretty rare, but they do exist.

Hi Thanks, I have tried Windows help/troubleshooting, went through the whole process, did not fix it. My Computer is only 9 months old, I brought it already made as I have know idea how to put a computer together :)

My computer is E.System, I've never heard of them, but I'll look them up on the net, see if they have any drivers, I'm not sure about the CD-RW (sorry, am working 10 years ago, lol) and if thats made by the same manufacturers, but the properities say 'Roxio', so am not sure.....will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Do you have any of the paperwork that came with the computer? Where did you purchase it?

Is it an eMachine? If so, they have a website at www.emachines.com and the help is under Customer Care.

Um....I brought it from Curry's, didn't really come with much, just a simple booklet on how to get started, but no manual as there is one one the computer somewhere. It's a EI System 302 INTEL PENTIUM, Which already had Windows XP Home Edition installed on it. Does that mean that E.STSTEM are the manufacturers of my PC? i CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ABOUT eMachine.

According to the link you posted, it "comes with a full 12 month warranty". If yo just got it 9 months ago, have you tried contacting them? I would think the drive would be covered under the warranty.

According to that description, you have a "Multi-Format Dual Layer DVD RW Drive" which means you should be able to write CDs and DVDs.

I agree with Larry. That drive should be under warranty.

If you've still got the quickstart guide, see if there is a web address on it for the company or contact the store you bought it from. You might be able to find the manual on your computer by doing a Start\ Search for " Manual " I've searched the internet and I can find the computers for sale, but cannot find the website address for the manufacturer.

Yes, I have been on the eMachines website, in the link given in post #7 but the model number isn't listed. Do you think it's worth trying to sort the corrupted driver out myself if possible, or should I take it back to Curry's?

When you select to unistall the device and reboot, the yellow exclamation mark comes back? Does the drive show up in My Computer? Have you tried burning an audio cd with Windows Media Player? I'm interested in finding out if it works in any program.

I was originally trying to burn a CD when Windows Media player said that it couldn't detect the CD ROM/Burning device.

I've tried to install/unistall several times, but, yes, the yellow exclamation mark keeps coming back, the drive is not showing up in 'My Computer' either. I'm pretty worried, there's something seriously wrong here.
