I have several digital photos that I would like to make sure no one elsle can claim them as their own work, so I am looking for a way to put the words....copywrited by....on them....any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Use Photosuite, or any photo editing program actually, to put text on the photo.

Or another way of doing it is getting a small app that adds a water mark to the whole image as some people just crop off the copyright off and they have the image... but with a light water mark though the whole picture, they have to then contact you or pay you for a realeased version that is watermark free..

Have a look.

I was hunting for a new one and this one just hit me... im a boy from from back in them days....(and before!!)

Just one comment, I pity the fool that uses a dial-up connection to these boards, because that avatar is going to take them about 5-10 minutes to download. It takes several seconds on a T1 connection!

I didn't notice the avatar taking particularly long - the boards as a whole download painfully slowly via 56k.

Getting back to the "copyRIGHT" situation, it doesn't matter what kind of symbol or deal you put on a file if you don't have a registered copyright for it. Placing something on a file that you think is yours, really is just a way of making other people THINK you have a real registered copyright. Been there in court and found out the hard way :) Take my advice and if you have something that valuable---Go throughthe steps to register your copyright the legal way !!

Does the 'poor man's copyright' where you mail a copy of your material to yourself and not open it unless you end up in court work? Most of us don't want other people using our material for profit, but don't have the money to copyright it the legal way.

According to publications by the Copyright office:

The way in which copyright protection is secured is frequently misunderstood. No publication or registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure copyright. (See following note.) There are, however, certain definite advantages to registration. See “Copyright Registration”

on page 7.

Obviously, you had an experience where those "advantages to registration" applied. Registering doesn't look too terribly difficult, and costs $30, from what I read.

Sending a copy of your material to yourself by mail and not ever opening it up is a good start ml. However it really isn't significant until you end up in court, and then it can be used to show at a given date who had the material and not necessarily who actually owns it. And Dave is very correct in that most people do not understand how to go about getting a copyright. And even if one does get a registered copyright, and find out someone is using your material for gain, you still have to go to court with that person or company and that costs money too. I suggest that if you have something that is totally and highly valuable, then go get a copyright registered and then just hope you don't have to go to court to validate it.
