Cannot burn a DVD using Toast 8

tmscrapbook

Question

I am using an iMac 1.9 GHz PowerPC G5 with 512 MB of RAM running OS 10.4.9. Needless to say it has a SuperDrive which is slot-loading in the side of the monitor. I was running Toast 6 successfully until a couple of weeks ago. Then it would get through about 38%-43% of the burn process and give me an error. This happened about 1 out of 4 times. I am using TDK-R printable dvds, and have never had trouble with them until now. I decided I would upgrade to Toast 8 thinking that would solve the problem. The first couple of dvds worked fine, then the same problem started - only now it's about 1 out of 10 successful burns. Lots of "coasters" are now laying around the house.

Here is the error message I get when attempting to burn a dvd:

The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR

Sense Code = 0x03, 0x01

This message makes me think that there is a problem with my SuperDrive instead of Toast 8. Does anyone know anything about this? Any suggestions on brands of external dvd burners? HELP!! :(

I would try different media first. Also, the Matsushita drives in the iMacs are really buggy. You would be better off buying an external burner. I would get a Pioneer drive and a good firewire case.

If I get an external burner, will I still be able to use iDVD?

If you have iDVD 6 the answer is yes. There likely are posts related to this in the iDVD forum at discussion.apple.com.

I have a lot of problem with Toast... I returned my MBP and had its superdrive replaced and still same errors with TDK, Verbatim, Mitsubishi, etc... On my PC, with a 120$ Liteon DVD burner I don't have any problem burning anything on any media.

The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR

Sense Code = 0x11

Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR

UNRECOVERED READ ERROR

The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR

Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03

Also can Roxio start to parse those nonsensical errors messages? It is pisses me off that I have to google error messages because Roxio developers are too lazy.

Complain to the drive makers about the strings. Toast just displays the drive error. There is no way to give a valid error, because most drives give bogus errors or the incorrect error due to lack of memory in firmware.

Apple Matsushita drives just don't work.

SURE SURE....IT'S THE DRIVES IT'S THE MEDIA.....ONLY THESE PROBLEMS DONT OCCUR ON TOAST 7.....HERE'S A CLUE....IT'S TOAST 8. GIMME A BREAK. DOES ANYONE HONESTLY THINK IT A REASONABLE EXPLANTION THAT A 90.00 PIECE OF SOFTWARE WITH MANY TRUMPED UP ACCOLADES CAN ONLY WORK WITH CERTAIN BRANDS OF MEDIA......UH YEAH RIGHT.

GOTO EBAY AND BUY TOAST 7

if you do a google on medium error, you will see most of the answers point to the media and/or the drive... It happens to all the burning software...

My Pioneer drive DVR-111D would not burn successfully but when I brought it to work, the Matsushita drive in our iMac cranked it out flawlessly using Toast 8! Not sure who to believe.
