golinux
I was talking to my local computer guy today. He said the word is that in about two years MS will release an OS requiring a monthly charge. It seems I heard something about this a while back. Anybody got the latest on how MS plans to suck us dry month after month to the grave?
ggrussell
Perhaps to corporate America, but not mom & pop. Microsoft will see sells plummet.

Beerman
With all the billions upon billions of money Microsoft still makes with crap, must they continue to tick off even more people? So, the OS will be free to install but require a monthly charge? I don't see this happening. Guess I better brush up on Ubuntu!
Guest ml
. Anybody got the latest on how MS plans to suck us dry month after month to the grave? I haven't heard anything, but it wouldn't surprise me. Microsoft sees the increasing use of computers by home users for entertainment purposes. They also see the integration of TVs and computers as a emerging trend. It would also tie into converting all televisions in the U.S. to digital broadcasts and allow them to compete with the cable and telephone industry. Many people already pay a monthly charge for satellite, cable or DSL. There are a lot of computers sitting on shelves unused because the owners do not have the expertise, time or money to pay someone to get rid of the spyware, viruses and software conflicts to get them running again. Paying a monthly fee to make certain the computer will work would appeal to those people.
Brendon
And if you don't pay your monthly "fees" Microsoft will send some of 'the boys' down to burn your store? -It's been done before.

gi7omy
Didn't they start doing that some time ago - in charging per 'seat' on the server systems instead of per computer? In other words, if more than one person used it, you forked out for another license
Brendon
I heard it was going to be 'per core', but I haven't heard if the manager who proposed that has been executed yet.
grandpabruce
I heard it was going to be 'per core', but I haven't heard if the manager who proposed that has been executed yet. It isn't per core. It's per processor. I came across the following article when I was searching to see if dual-core processors were supported by Windows XP Home. http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlig...lticore.mspx#EV
