Disabling unnecessary features

burnbabyburn

Question

The EMC 9 installation program is poorly behaved -- it doesn't allow the user to pick and choose which features will be installed (for the most part -- some things can be de-selected if one can figure out the purpose of the feature from its name) or choose a partition.

Anyway, there is a lot of stuff I don't want running on my Vista Utlimate machine until I need it. I've just spent quite a bit of time looking at the posts on this forum, but I can't find a comprehensive list of items I can disable. Can anyone point me to such a list? Thank you. Here is what I have so far:

Startup:

-DragtoDisc: allows drag-and-burn to an icon. Disabled.

-DMXLauncher. Do I need this if I don't care about media management? Disabled.

-CommonSDK. Do I need this to run??? Left it.

Services:

-Roxio UPnP renderer. Disabled.

-Roxio UPnp server. Disabled.

-Liveshare P2P server. Disabled.

-Roxmedia DB9. Disabled.

-Roxio Hard Drive Watcher. Disabled.

I don't need my system taken over by a media content mgr. I just want to burn discs, and edit photos. Maybe someday I'll use some of the other features, but not anytime soon. For now, I'd like to keep my machine running light and problem-free...

you miss the point here Joke, if you had read what we are saying...

...

posting your real issue so we can move on.

You know, I don't miss much. I was going to respond but I've decided otherwise.

Anyone want a full Roxio Creater 9 suite with extra features XXXXXXXX

This isn't e-Bay.

"If you didn't want a suite of programs, why did you buy it?"

"....buying EMC 9 seems a bit much for what you claimed you wanted."

These two statements are pretty legitimate questions, I think. I assume when you purchased the program that you thought that you would have the option to pick and choose whatever portions of the program you wanted to install.

If you just want a simple program, or several simple programs to do what you want I suggest that you should have found those several "simple" programs that do what you want and purchase them. I'm still running XP/SP2 with EMC 7.5, 8 deluxe and 9 deluxe on three separate computers and except for D2D being removed, I don't have any problems with what's running on the computer. Using msconfig to stop a lot of files from starting has helped a lot.

Anyway, if you really want some help with a particular problem you are having with any of Roxio's EMC programs, please post it in the proper forum listing, along with some particulars about your computer etc, and you will be surprised to find out that many of the Gurus that frequent this forum are total experts at EMC programs.

As stated before, we are all just users like you and frequent the roxio forum to help others with Roxio programs and not necessarily here to delve into other types of problems. However, you will find that there are many other problems that have been fixed just because most of the gurus are more than well acquainted with computer problems in general as well as others, probably like you, that are knowledgeable and do help in many instances.

Good luck with whatever problems you have and hope that being a part of this forum has helped you in some way.

Frank...

Go ahead ... so do i, ill counter them as you post them.....

just for the record, this is a user site (run by users ? , people just like you?) so why get mad here, you just *^$$ off a heap of other users here whom want help........ You dont by the content of your posts?

if you are so nicked off at Roxio , send them an email or call them, as this is not the place for it.

as Roxio staff are not dwellers here in the board?, just us users (just like you?)

Now if you have finnished hijacking other users post, maybe you can post what your issue is (and some PC info about your system) and some of us here can try to help?

Hi Guys,

Pardon me for jumping in here, or if you like, hijacking the post.

My reason for asking is directly linked to statements I have seen in this as well as other posts, and my questions are rather simple and not inteded to ruffle anyone's feathers. I'll appologize now if I offend anyone.

Questions:

Why doesn't roxio post some sort of disclaimer in the support area that this forum is NOT designed nor intended to communicate with them?

I have looked all over the entire site and have not seen such a statement. Is there one? If so, would someone be so kind as to point me to it.

Wouldn't you agree that a newbee to site would get the impression that the forum was in fact a part of problem resolution provided by roxio?

Isn't it a reasonable assumption that when the moderator of the forum goes by the handle of "John at roxio", that the site is indeed run and monitored by a roxio representative? If it is not, then perhaps a disclaimer posted and pinned would relieve some confusion.

Help me out here guys, what did I miss?

Also am wondering if anyone has any idea as to why problem tickets are not addressed in a reasonable time frame? Or as I have seen mentioned on the forun, phone calls do not get answered? I believe this to be a prime reason that customers are venting on the forum.

In light of the above mentioned, I am wondering what is driving the level of "roxio loyalty" as expressed by some of the guru's here if there is _NO_ connection. I mean to the point that they would counter comments

on other forums referencing roxio product problems posted by disappointed users?

I too am a grey haired (67) retired TI manager (formerly BBRC), with 40+ years of High Tech, wafer/chip/component level experience (no brag), so I am not just an average Joe on the subject of what makes electronic marvels work, and certainly not new to computers. So be gentle  .

If you go to the link below, the way one is directed here is through the "Discusssion Groups" hyperlink. Maybe a matter of semantics but it does not say Roxio Technical Support. :)

Actually I agree with RPG. On the Roxio Home page under Support the link is directly to this discussion group. At the right, top of this page it says Roxio.com Support. which indicates that the link is to support by Roxio. Any newbie would assume from that this is a Support group by Roxio. I also believe Roxio should make it clearer that this discussion group is not a "direct" Roxio support function

Your link only took me to the ROXIO SUPPORT page, which I am more than familar with. The Discussion group is listed under the SUPPORT menu. I Don't think the words "Technical" enter into this equation, nor is that important, The fact that you access the Discussion group THROUGH the ROXIO SUPPORT page or any other link on the ROXIO site is reason enough to make one believe that the forum is roxio sanctioned, and, I think there are enough posts from users who thought they were directing their message to roxio scattered throughout the forum. Until there is some sort of statement to the otherwise, I think you can expect the confusion to continue.

I agree with you....this has been the problem since day one.

On the old forum (pre-2006) there was a good write up about what the "discussion group" was, but it still had a lot of people confused.

More specifically, Highlander, if you have a valid solution, lets discuss it here, now, and just keep the total public issues somewhat under wraps. If not and you still think that Roxio is the 'cat's meow' then let's meet again again at TomsHardware.com in the software/vista forums (I have the same userid) or if you like, in the ms-windows/vista forums (also with the same userid) or even both to begin with. I will always be glad to tell you where I am currently bashing Roxio products - please post your appropriate id here if it is different as I would like to know that I am dealing with an honest poster (and not just any poser).

you miss the point here Joke, if you had read what we are saying in regards to this site and your issue, and as stated , if you didnt want all the apps in the suit (suit? means a pack of applications?)

yes you have a elua?, but yes you got a pack of apps, if you dont want all of them then use the burning in Vista native... or buy apps that do one thing...

but on the main thing, why are you posting here if you dont have an issue with the programe other than the amount of apps you have installed after the SUIT dose its thing?

if you have a REAL issue with some part of EMC9 then post it here... as others here may help you?, but if you dont then i think your point is mute...

as to a fight over what boards you venture onto... and me post this and you post that??... i dont have time to play silly games with you.

if you want a jousting match them go anoy some one else (maybe on the Nero board)

Look forward to you cooling down and posting your real issue so we can move on.

Sadly, it seems that I over-disabled in my above post. PhotoSuite crashes and burns ( PhotoSuite is not supposed to burn!). [sorry, I'm a bit dazed from spending several hours doing a EMC 9 clean install. I'm really not sure how anyone w/o a couple of computer science degrees gets these suites installed.]

Anyway, I re-enabled everything except DragToDisc and PhotoSuite works again. I'll have to see what I can hack out via trial-and-error -- the System Events log didn't point out anything interesting.

It sure would be nice if Roxio would publish a document for techies like me that explains the functionality of all startup programs and services. I looked everywhere I could think of for such a document.

I am with you on this. I have spent several hours, using many programs. My primary interest is to only use the virtual disk driver (and MAYBE) the disk burner. The disk burner was the only reason I bought the full software package, not knowing I was now going to have a bathtub and kitchen sink running in my system! I will post the files I am able to remove later, after some more experienc. So far far I have been able to stop most of the services you listed, without issue. I will list some other items I was able to determine were loaded... I am also running Vista 64 so I may need these (only time will tell)

RXDCExtShlExt c:\program files\roxio\easy cd creator 8\virtual drive\dc_shellext64.dll

c2scsi64Roxio c:\windows\system32\drivers\c2scsi64.sys

PxHlpa64Px c:\windows\system32\drivers\pxhlpa64.sys

HEY ROXIO, GIVE US THE OPTION -

I DO NOT WANT EVERYTHING YOU MAKE ACTIVELY RUNNING IN MY SYSTEM. IT WILL CAUSE ME TO JUST REMOVE THE PACKAGE AND START A CAMPAIGN ON AS MANY FORUMS AS I CAN - I VISIT A LOT OF VISTA AND XP SITES.

You're not able to pick not to install Drag to Disk which I do find a problem. However, as it's listed as a separate program, you can uninstall it in control panel. Many find D2D not to be trusted as will all packet writing apps.

You can also remove DMXLauncher if you want but I'm not sure about CommonSDK.

If all you wanted was a disc emulator, you could've gotten the free DAEMON tools, and then used Vista's built in burning capabilities. I run both emulators, the one that came with EMC 9 and DAEMON tools.

I am sorry if this is taking up anyone's bandwidth, I am truly just replying to the last three posters (you three, please read all of this)...

I am not hijacking anything. I am only and totally just responding to burnbabyburn in the spirit that he originally posted because it is also an issue to me. If anything _you_ three posters are trying to hijack the original post. You three go away!

I am a registered, legal, 'owner' of Creative 9 (read the eula). which I think, makes me a USER with all of the rights to post here that you claim. Up until now, I have been a very pleased user of Roxio products and have been for a very long time (most probably much longer than any of you). I did purchase the upgrade because it claimed to work with Vista and I had just converted all of my systems to Vista Ultimate.

My previous 'suite' products never attempted to take my system over or to ever send all of my interactions back to some unknown corporate server. I never had to be concerned that maybe 10% of my system resources were being _WASTED_ by some engineer's 'GOOD' idea. I am not a kid or wacko, I am a grey-haired, senior R&D software engineer at a major technology company (initials are very similar to those of Harry Potter).

You guys wise-up, Roxio monitors all of these forums (I would really like to think that 'marketing' isn't that ignorant). Without further, true assistance with this issue, I am starting my rail against ALL Roxio Products next week. I came here first to see if there was a reasonable solution, certainly not to be attacked by some other members.

If you 'GURUS' really want to give constructive information on how to solve this (in my opinion a) MAJOR problem, great(!), post it. I am calling it a MAJOR issue because I have personally seen several other complaints in this and several other forums.

More specifically, Highlander, if you have a valid solution, lets discuss it here, now, and just keep the total public issues somewhat under wraps. james I hope this is more reasonable than my original 'angry reply' post - If you must, nuke it again if it is not up to forum standards. :ninja:

Actually, you'll find that most of the Gurus disable the Media Watch functions of EMC 9 as well, because yes, they can suck up a lot of system resources. We also typically uninstall Drag-to-Disc. And then, as necessary, disable things with MSCONFIG. A real "custom install" option would be nice, I'll agree. The problem was the tone of, "I'll start a campaign... blah blah blah." We're users too, and believe me, I don't think this forums are watched closely at all by Roxio/Sonic. If you want to contact Roxio directly, this is not the way to do it.

As for myself, I was merely suggesting an alternative based on what you said you wanted from the suite, which wasn't much, and if you don't want DVD authoring, video production, photo editing, audio editing, backup, etc. buying EMC 9 seems a bit much for what you claimed you wanted.
