Ripping clips from DVD using Capture?

nutmegger

Question

I am trying to rip short video clips off a DVD and eventually convert them into AVI files. I know that Roxio can convert file types, but I can't figure out how to get the files off the DVD, in order to cut out short segments.

When I go to "Capture," it says that my DVD has no files on it.

On the DVD are IFO files, BUP files, and PowerDVD files. (I suspect the PowerDVD files may be a problem)

There are no copyright issues here, since it is footage of state government proceedings and is in the public domain. I don't think it's protected (although I'm not sure how to tell).

I am basically wondering why this does not show up on "Capture." And is Roxio 7.5 even capable of ripping video segments?

Power DVD files? What is the file extension on those files?

When I check out "Properties" for these files it doesn't have an extension on them (is this possible?!!) It just says Type of File: PowerDVD File.

I am able to open these files in Windows Media Player, but they remain labeled as "PowerDVD File."

The file names have no extensions in them.

Okay - they are .VOB files.

When you're in Capture, check for a second listing of your DVD drive in the list of devices.

There should be a film strip and the text DVD on top of the icon. ( It's a bug in the program.)
