Mark G
I bought a Cannon DVD recorder. It came with MY DVD. I upgraded to Roxi My DVD Premier 8 . MY DVD only downloads half the time. Premier 8 doesn't recognize that a camera is connected. I'm using the USB that came with the camera. I'm told I may need a firewire. I don't even know if my camera will connect with a firewire (I guess BestBuy could tell me). Anyway I also bought an eMachine Media Center Pc with windows xp. I'm going nuts. I bought this thing to make sport videos for my kids teams and the process is making me want to jump out the window. Thank God I live in a ranch..... Please someone talk me down off the ledge... See if it shows up in the device manager at all. check if u can use the durner with any other cd or dvd software. if u dont have any browse google and searcg dvd authoring and download any trial version. u can try to copy any file and pasting it in my computer /e:drive (or whatever letter represents your cannon drive) one of these steps should determine if ya dvd burner is active and working. once this is established that it works u can focus on software issues. REDWAGON
"I don't even know if my camera will connect with a firewire " If you can tell just by looking at all the ports on the camera I would certainly think that the manual that came with the camera would certainly indicate what optional ports or connections are on the camera. "I upgraded to Roxi My DVD Premier 8 " I am not familiar with the above program but the other EMC programs I have require a !EEE 1394 (Firewire) connection to capture video from. Frank... Guest ml
What kind of Canon DVD recorder? Does it record onto DVDs or a hard drive? If it records on DVDs, you should be able to capture directly from the DVD through the DVD drive on your computer. If it's a hard drive model, I'd suggest you visit the Cannon Tech Support website for the correct procedure to capture the video off the camcorder. You might be able to capture DV AVI video with Windows Movie Maker and that camcorder. I haven't tried it through a USB port, so I don't know for certain. individeol
And, it will be low quality video, once it is in WMM. I dont think windows movie maker is gr8 at all but u can set ya options and even choose the DV AVI format which is a standard digital format that is largly unchanged despite the software that hosts it. The things that affect your video capture is the hardware more than the software.(unless u choose the incorrect settings , like capturing HD footage in a DV project. In this case the footage would be reduced from HD resolution/quality to that of DV which is a far inferior compression format.) But DV AVI is a compleated format. if it was altered it would no longer be DV AVI. there are also settings for poor medium and high quality. This is only a short term solution though. I strongly recomend you get Firewire cable and even a capture card if PC hardware does not support firewire input. Firewire is a much faster and and stable than USB. Firewire is the standard for capturing video across the board. I havent seen u reply since I joked that u should jump from the ranch window........ hope the grass is OK! ggrussell
It appears (to me) that everyone over looked the most obvious with his very first statement: "I bought a Cannon DVD recorder." Sounds more like a Canon miniDVD camcorder. I haven't seen a miniDVD camcorder yet that has firewire. When and if the original poster gets back to us, hopefully he will let us know. There are many options to get video from the miniDVD into the computer for editing.

No, what I was referring to is the speed in which you can download a video, through USB. You are apt to have audio/video sync problems, unless you are using something like the Dazzle card. Like Gary said, we have to wait until the OP comes back and tells all of us which Canon is being used.
