pinto45
Dell Precision 360 Pentium 4 Workstation, 3 ghz, 2 gig mem. Zero problems with this system until now. Yesterday I bought a Plextor external DVD that came with ECDC 6. Version 5 was on my system but would not update to recognize this newer drive. I uninstalled 5 and installed version 6 and the world came to an end!!! Apparently this is a common problem so I'll just paste a post from a user on Amazon forum with the same problem: After installing, I found that all of my hard drives and partitions had been assigned new drive letters, seemingly at random. Furthermore, in Disk Management, most partitions didn't show a letter and those that did show a letter, appeared twice in Windows Explorer. Windows was notifying me that \System Volume Information\tracking.log was corrupt and that I needed to run chkdsk. In addition to the above it duplicated one of the disks and assigned a new drive letter. It also took the Dell help information from the OS disk and created a new "local disk" with a new drive letter. So I have two new drives that do not exist. Also a minor problem but it also changed the icons on a number of programs. This is my workhorse system. Can anybody help me with this horrible situation? Thank you in advance. Since this is a volunteer-based board, and there are not that many who answer on V.6, your best bet would probably be to contact Roxio - generally phone support for installation issues is free. Lynn Thank you for your response, Lynn. The Roxio site sent me to on-line tech support. I just got my reply. They told me they do not support Roxio software that comes bundled with a drive They sent me back here. The phone support call is to Canada and I assume they would give me the same response. The other problem sufferer I quoted took the phone-support route with an hour on the phone and no help at all. I just bought this yesterday! This kind of support attitude is outrageous! Guess my system is trashed. I'm going to discuss it with Plextor. I very surprised that a quality name like Plextor would include something so potentially disastrous with its drives. I've been using ECDC from early on. It's the last time I will ever buy a Roxio product.

An OEM is usually a version that a large computer manufacturer buys and installs to sell preinstalled on their computer (sometimes they may add features that are only available in the full retail Platinum eddition) The computer buyer gets a copy of the preinstalled software in case they have to reinstall it on their computer. For example, if the files get corrupt or the hard drive has to be reformatted, that computer user needs a copy of the software to reinstall the software that came with the computer. OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer. Some OEM, versions come with CD burners. These "Basic" versions vary and are customized to fit the contract of the OEM purchaser. Likewise, ALL support comes from your OEM provider and not from Roxio. Contact your OEM provider and see what they have to say.

I'm aware of the OEM situation, but this particular problem with this software seems to be quite common and I would think that a major name like ECDC might have a solution. I'm just frustrated. I don't think I have ever had a program wreak this virus-kind of havoc on a system. I e-mailed my problem to Plextor yesterday. No response as yet. I won't hold my breath. Unfortunately from what I have read in other posts about this problem there is no solution except format, reinstall windows and all programs. This system has three physical HD drives and it will take a week's work to put everything back together. Regards,
tbrewst
Just something you can try but it's worth a shot.Put your Windows disc in,reboot, when it says boot to cd hit a key. When you get the choice that says install or repair using recovery console hit R(I think that's how it goes).Once you're in the recovery console select the drive that has the OS on it (C:\windows?).Once you get there Type CHKDSK.This will run checkdisk. If it runs and then tells you it found a problem and fixed it,reboot and see if all is well.If not run checkdisk again, this time typing CHKDSK /r.This may take awhile to run so don't mess with it if it seems to be taking a long time. If you don't feel comfortable doing this don't try it.It's just a shot at recovering the volume info.

Regards, Once this is over, you might look into getting a full back-up imaging program, such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True-Image, and backing up onto an External Hard Drive (they're getting both huge and cheap these days). The time saved - or just knowing you have that as a reserve - would probably pay for it. Lynn
athertonj@hotmail.com
Exactly the same thing happend to me. I also have 3 HDD in my system so this could be the common problem. All I did to recoveer was to do a system restore and all the drive letters went back to normal. The 'free' disk is now in the bin.

BTW - these are public boards, and are searched by google and other search engines, which in turn are searched by spammers "harvesting' names to use for spamming purposes. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to change your id name - you might try contacting Roxio. It's something to think about in the future, on other Forums. larrythecomputerguy
FOLKS: Are you running Windows XP?? If so, solution "should be" fairly easy. Go to System Restore and try to restore to a date before you installed ECDC 6. As long as you hadn't disabled System Restore function, all "should" go back to normal. Then return the Plextor drive and try another brand. If system restore doesn't work, it WILL BE painful to rebuild everything. If all that has happened is a relettering of disk drives, pull out the 2 & 3 drives, and only mess with the primary drive until it is running satisfactorily. Hope this works for you!
