davidlaska
I read the FAQ but I can easily download the french (and others) update and apply it ok, but not the english update. I can,t even get to the page for the download (page not found). So this makes it an other issue besides my net and browser setup. Updates for roxio plantanum 5.x does work fine in all languages except english (I still have the box and it is english us). I tried to use a mac also for the download but roxio website will not allow a mac to see pc stuff except if you are buying. I hope I have not posted a question that was already answered . This is one from the old site I didn't pack up and take with me, and I trust Brendon will finish it. First, the language change is on your computer, somehow or other it got tagged. You are going to have to find all the files that end in .loc and rename them to something else that isn't used by anything else, such as .ori (for original). This will take them out of service, and will restore English to everything except a few screens. That part of the answer will have to wait for Brendon. Second, there are issues with the URLs for the updates - I don't remember clearly exactly what (believing it would be fixed). Try one of these: http://www.roxio.com/en/support/uk/ecdc/so...updatesv5.jhtml and for the drive up patch if needed to support a newer burner (last updated Dec '04) http://www.roxio.jp/support/download/ecdc5/driveup5.3.5v.exe Lynn
ogdens
The foreign language additions are provided by localizer files the foreign language updater puts in each folder. If ECDC sees these files, it uses them. Uninstall doesn't delete the localizer files, so the next install sees them and uses them and you're still in the foreign language. Find and rename all .LOC files you can find in your hard drive to .ORI (original) or something other than .LOC - that should fix the problem. There might be up to 15 or so of them in a full installation. You can delete those files once you're sure they aren't needed by anything else. You might find there's a menu page in Direct CD that's still in the foreign language. Sorry, the only way you can change that one is to apply an English updater. pcstark30
Lynn: Your post #2 here is the first site I've found where the 535 DriveUp Download works/the main upgrade was OK at the normal site. What do you think about making this site a Sticky as I'm sure Many are Still in the ditch? If my CD-RW is working WITHOUT the Driveup update, is there any chance executing it could Gum-Up the works re: Less is better? I may just leave it on the Desktop not expecting to Change CD-RW's. Thanks for the Good Link! BTW: I UnInstalled Dell 4 and Installed eBay Retail 5 Platinum and it is actually working! On Audio, I make an Image First but may get by without it by Slowing Down to 4X vs. 8X. I had Uninstalled MusicMatch and Real Player but Win Media Player 9 is still there. lynn98109
If you don't need the drive-up patch, there's no urgency in installing it - if you get a new burner it will probably come with a Basic edition of a program the manufacturer feels will work well with it, and you may have a new computer by then, which may or may not be workable with ECDC 5 - a lot has already changed since it came out in 1999. I'm still hoping the US site downloads will be corrected; we have had reports the links are incorrectly written, but the sites work fine. If WinPlayer 9 is still there, and ECDC 5 is still working, I would supsect you have not done any recording with WinPlayer 9. If you were to try to, either WinPlayer 9 would not work or you would, at that point "break" ECDC 5, and probably not be able to get it back. pcstark30
The info about recording with Media Player 9 and damaging ECDC5-P is scary enlightening. I doubt I would have used it for anything other than viewing but now I know I won't. Thanks!
Brendon
The DriveUp patch is ONLY there to add new drives to the drive recognition table that ECDC5 maintains. It does NOT add any updates or enhancements to Easy CD Creator. If ECDC already recognizes your drive, DON'T use the DriveUp patch because that's just another thing which can go wrong and mess up your perfectly good installation. If you have a newish drive which NEEDS a DriveUp patch, install that after you've updated to 5.3.5 because the DriveUp is only an ADD-ON patch. If you need the 5.3.5.10 platinum update, you might be SOL again. I just spent half an hour trying to get that updater or at least start it downloading, and I had no luck. Foreign updaters come down fine, but NOT the English one. I think there are a couple of servers running at the address you are sent to by the updates page, and at least one of them is unserviceable! If you keep stabbing the "refresh" button every few seconds you can eventually get through to the page at http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/ecdc_..._535dl_t2.jhtml which tells you that Take Two has been disabled, and invites you to click a button to continue. (Please note you can't just jump to these addresses, you need to be refered to them by the previous pages in the updates section) At this point you're directed to http://roxio.com/en/jhtml/ftp/filedownload.jhtml?id=208 and after a long timeout period you get a notice that this page is unavailable. It works fine for other language updaters (Different id= number) but not for 208, the English one. I think whoever is in charge of that download has died or is asleep at the wheel. It's very bad for business. I'd like to know which company hosts the downloads for Roxio. In the meantime you can get 5.3.5.10 functionality by using a foreign language updater if you can understand the foreign language. You can return most of the foreign prompts (but not all of them) to English by searching for and deleting the foreign language localizer files which have an extension of .LOC There might be up to 15 of these .LOC files in a full installation and deleting or renaming them will give you back a lot (but not all) of the English prompts. Yes, it's bad. It shouldn't be necessary. But it helps in the meantime.
pcstark30
Thanks, Brendon. That info will surely help others although I WAS Able to Update to 5.3.5 BEFORE Christmas at the "Normal" Roxio download site; Fortunately, I just had no luck DnLoading Driveup, which I have tucked away Un-used unless a CD-RW disaster/new purchase requires it. I'm wondering if this "difficulty" is all just a marketing ploy/sneaky hint to upgrade from 4 & 5. Thanks again for everyone's help!

It is not a marketing ploy, altho it does seem to suggest nobody feels like putting the needed time into fixing it. They are putting the time into newer programs. davidlaska
Lynn Thankyou very much for the working links, I was able to download them (my primary issue) easily, even with a mac ( I do that a lot because my mac laptop is always running and its my first virus checking step). Without your help, I would never be able to use the software. One unrelated question I have is "How to mount a Disk image I created with Easy CD Platnium?". I had to use my mac with toast to mount it and then copy the files to the PC and install that route, it works but it is not the best method. I can live with that though. David My Cd Dvd write drive is pretty old, it is next in inline at toshiba to be moved to legacy drives when I check for firmware last year. My scsi dvd is just a reader Thanks everyone but the first post by Lynn9810 fixed everything I could not fix. I did read the rest of this thread after that. I have the english version updater, do I still have to find those local files regardless, because applying the updater did not help. I was doing fine with the french until something happened where I need to read the alerts now. It has been a year so I don,t know if anybody is still here. update: removing those files did the trick. Thanks for help that was impossible to Google (yes, these days most help questions are answered with " did you google first?". I find that annoying since it has been part of the culture long enough to be assumed that one did. Unless personalities have dwarfed the issue. For example I normally don,t ask everybody who has startup issues with their computer with, "Is it plugged in?" Maybe if flamed or the person reveals that I should ask. But our culture assumes a non working electrical device need to be plugged in before deciding it is broke when visual inspection is fine.

Yup, it is those files that tell the program to switch languages. There are still some screens that will be in whatever other language, tho. Wish I had Brendon's answer saved. There are still some screens that will be in whatever other language, tho. Wish I had Brendon's answer saved. Lynn It's here - about six messages up this thread. If it's the answer for people who have used the wrong updater that you want, here it is . . . The foreign language you're seeing is supplied by foreign language localizer (.LOC) files. An ordinary uninstall doesn't kill these files, and nor does running an English updater, so they stay there and are read and used next time you install. Do a search on files with the extension .LOC in the Adaptec/Roxio parts of your hard drive, and rename any you find to a different extension, like perhaps .ORI (original) which isn't used by anything else. You could find 12 or 15 in a full installation. Renaming them takes them out of service and should return you to English. You can delete them once you're satisfied everything is running sweetly. There are a few bitmapped screens which don't rely on the LOC files and will stay in the foreign language. Running the English updater will fix those bitmapped screens.
