Emc 8 And Lacie Lightscribe

sprogger

Question

Folks,

Have been using EMC8 for some time now .. with some reservations but works OK ..

Recently my DVD burner died so i replaced this with a Lacie Lightscribe 16X DL drive..

The drive comes with EMC 7.2 (not very useful) and the instructions tell me to install this to get the Lighscribe drive working ... not sure I want to fall back to 7.2 but dont seem to be able to find how to get the drive working with EMC 8..

Any suggestions?

Chris

You need to install the lightscribe driver. I don't know if you got 2 cd's with the drive, but if you didn't, look on the one cd that you got. It should be on there.

Once you install the drivers this is how you print to the cd/dvd's

Burning labels onto discs using LightScribe®

LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling is an exciting disc labeling technology that lets you to burn CD and DVD labels simply by flipping the discs over and putting them back in the same disc drive that burned your data.

LightScribe technology combines the CD or DVD drive of your computer with specially coated discs and Roxio’s disc-burning software to produce precise, silkscreen-quality, iridescent labels. With LightScribe, your disc is your label. It’s the no-hassle way to create attractive labels for all your music mix CDs, digital video or photo archives, and for any business application.

To use LightScribe, you need:

A LightScribe-capable CD or DVD recorder.

LightScribe-capable discs. LightScribe discs are treated with a special coating on the label side that reacts with the laser in your recorder to create the label image.

Making sure you have a LightScribe disc:

The LightScribe system requires the use of LightScribe-enabled discs. LightScribe uses control features in the center (hub) of the disc to identify media as LightScribe media. If your system does not seem to recognize the media as LightScribe media, take the following steps:

Make sure the disc is a LightScribe-enabled disc. LightScribe media will have the LightScribe logo in the inner hub area. There will also be visible control features inside, and adjacent to, the coated label area.

Make sure the disc is properly oriented in the drive. The label side, which contains a special coating, should be face down in the drive.

Clean the center area (hub) of the disc. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe the hub area and remove any dirt or smudges that may be covering the control features.

If these steps do not fix the problem, try another LightScribe disc.

To burn a label on to a disc using LightScribe:

Create the label in Label Creator as you normally would. You can select one of the following styles:

Quick Title: This style displays only the title and artist (for audio discs) or date (for data discs). Use the Quick Title template for the fastest label creation.

Quick Content: This style displays the title and contents of the disc. For an audio disc, the contents are the track names, and for a data or MP3 disc, the contents are the file names.

Or you can use a regular Label Creator style to include additional information and graphics on your label.

Note: Using a style that includes graphics or a lot of text increases the amount of time it takes to burn the label on to the disc. The Quick Title and Quick Content styles take a few minutes to burn on to the disc, while a graphical label can take much longer.

Insert the disc in the Lightscribe-capable recorder with the label side facing down.

Click Print, or choose File > Print.

The Print dialog box appears.

From the Printer Name drop-down list, select the LightScribe-capable recorder, if it is not already selected.

Optional: Click Preview to see how the label will look before you burn it to the disc.

LightScribe provides three different contrast levels for you to choose from when labeling your discs. For Printing Preferences, select Draft, Normal, or Best quality.

The label burn time will increase from Draft to Normal to Best:

Draft: Provides the fastest burn time with lowest contrast. Use draft level for utility labels.

Normal: Provides moderate burn time with good contrast. Use normal level for professional labels.

Best: Provides the sharpest contrast with the longest burn time. Use best level for important business transaction, gifts and personal treasures.

Enter the number of discs you want to burn labels to.

Click OK to begin burning the label to the disc.

The Burn Progress dialog box appears.

The label burn time varies with the amount of information contained on the label, the placement of the information on the label, the contrast level selected, the LightScribe disc used and the drive.

The LightScribe system burns the image in concentric, circular rings from the inside diameter to the outside diameter of the label surface. Rings that contain no image data are “skipped.” A simple, circular title, such as a Quick Title label, is accomplished most quickly because the information is limited to a circular rings close to the inside diameter. The density of the rings is adjusted according to the contrast level selection so higher contrast is achieved through more densely packaged rings.

The LightScribe disc itself and the drive compatibilities also influence the label burn time.

In all cases, the writing system runs in the background and you can go on to other tasks while the label is burning.

LightScribe Drive Is Not Recognized By Label Creator

The information in this article applies to:

Easy Media Creator 8

Applicable Operating Systems:

Windows 2000 Professional

Windows XP Home / Pro / Media Center

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Issue:

Label Creator does not recognize that you have a LightScribe drive installed when attempting to print a Label Creator project.

Solution:

In order for applications to print to a LightScribe drive you must have the LightScribe driver installed. This driver is normally installed as a part of the software that was shipped with your LightScribe drive. This means that if Label Creator does not recognize your LightScribe drive you will need to install the software that was shipped with the drive. Until that has been done LightScribe enabled applications will not recognize that you have a LightScribe drive installed.

You may also wish to download an updated LightScribe driver directly from HP at the following URL:

Just go to lightscribe.com and download the drivers. No need to find it on the disc's. While you are there, you might want to download some of the free templates they have listed. They are pretty simple but effective.

In V8, you can use any template, not just the two lightscribe ones listed. You can also use your own own images. Pick one with a lot of contrast and one that has an overall image. Those have worked best for me.

Folks,

Thanks for the advice ... sending me back to the Lightscribe website didnt help as they tell me to install the supplied software (EMC 7.2 which is not going to get me anywhere)..

Anyhow .. finally "fixed" the issue by deleting the device drivers for both of my DVD burners (IBM Multidrive plus this LaCie drive) and rebooting windoze.

Seemed this time around it found the device drivers and now CD Labeller recognises the drive (woohoo)

Have not tried the labelling yet as am still trying to fix a DVD burn issue (posted in DVD Create forum)
