Project Won't Import Data From Existing Cd-rw

egertonj

Question

I'm running Easy Media Creator 7.1.0.135 ENU, Basic DVD edition.

I create patch CD's in order to update my off-line clients that I support. I use CD-RWs for this so I don't rip through hundreds of CD's regularly. I was using Version 5 without any problem. Recently our systems were blanket upgraded to the above version.

The problem:

When I start a project, I used to be able to select the first file to add to the project, and Roxio would automatically read the contents of the CD and drop the info into the project as it should. I could then write to the disk with the new file in the appropriate spot.

With 7, it's not reading the files on the CD and the button to do that is greyed out.

What's the problem?

A software update cannot be the solution unless it is the only solution because the current software is broken (configuration control issues).

EDIT: Forgot to mention my machines are W2K SP4 with all the hotfixes

Does this help?

How to access sessions from previous version

It seems unlikely that Sessions would have been disabled in a Basic version…

I still suspect the media/drive, try the 10 cent test.

Use a CD-R and add a file. Eject the disc and load it again. See if you can add to it.

If that fails, to you have another PC you can test the software on or swap out burners with?

I've got 3 systems side-by-side. All have the same problem in all of them. Dell Precision 350's, same model burner, same software versions.

In addition to ml's suggestion about checking for a firmware update for you burner(s), which is always a good idea, V7 doesn't automatically add the previous sessions the way you described. If you have the disc in the drive already, you should be able to just click on the icon if the disc is still 'open' for additional writing. If it's not available, it could be that the disc has been closed. I just burned 2 seesions on an RW disc, making sure to leave the option on the Burn progress window under Record Methods un-checked. If it's checked, the disc will be closed and you can't import from it. If you are not seeing those options, click on the Details button on the Burn Progress screen.

Thanks for the notes.

I've got a Samsung SM-332B with version T410 firmware. from what I've read, that appears to be the latest version and was shipped with the system originally.

The disks I'm using were originally created using 5 on a different system. When I load them in 7 with the disk and device utility, it show two sessions. The first is closed, the second is open. It also lists the disk as being not recordable. However, if I take the same disk to my system with Roxio 5 on it, I can write to it without any problem whatsoever.

I burned a fresh CD using 7. I made sure the "Read-Only" check box was NOT checked. I also made sure that the Record method under device summary indicated "Appendable."

After burning, I ran into the same end result: a disk I could add to using 5 on another system, but one that would not allow me to import the previously burned data on the disk so I could organize it properly.

Sounds similar to an issue reported in XP at one time that the OS was causing problems with writing seesions, but you said you're using W2K. Other than the drive firmware, which it does look like you are current on, I don't know what else to suggest at this point myself.

Ok. Let's go back to your original post. You said " I'm running Easy Media Creator 7.1.0.135 ENU, Basic DVD edition. I create patch CD's in order to update my off-line clients that I support. My question is.... who did the blanket upgrade and where did they get the software? You have to understand that Version 7 gets the information it needs from the CD burner itself through drivers and firmware. Version 5 had driver updates from Roxio. Both will coexist on the same machine, but Version 5 might not work if you're using Win XP. However, Win XP has a built in CD burning capacity and you can use that to burn a CD if that is your OS.

Since you are unwilling to go to the website of the CD burner manufacturer and only have the Basic Version, I'd suggest you go to whoever did the 'blanket upgrade' and tell them that you can no longer use your CD burner.

It's not that we a end users are unwilling to help. It's just that your machines appear to have a problem caused by a blanket upgrade and there's no telling what else might have been done to cause you these problems.

I feel your pain. It's definitely something in the software. I have the same issue after a painful 7.5 to 8 upgrade then uninstall of 8 to get back to 7.5. After getting my drives to be seen by windows and Roxio to detect my drives as burners, I cannot import any session from any disc burned (it used to work fine). I have another pc at home with the same version (7.5) which has never been upgraded and it imports sessions without any issues. I have uninstalled all roxio and sonic products, used MS install cleaner, roxiozap, registry cleaners and re-installed multiple times with no change...

Another possibility, of course, is the CD-RW disc is failing. You aren't making the mistake of thinking you an make long-term back-ups on RW media, are you? RW media fades out sooner or later regardless, but if formatted for Packet-Writing, usually sooner.

And another possibility is the burners are vastly different ages. Burners older than a certain age will format the entire disc for Packet-Writing; newer than that will format only the section they need.

But if the idea is to KEEP the data, NEVER format the disc. Also, NEVER use RW media, altho it is fine for short-term things like testing, and transferring data from one computer to another if there are no other options.

Not the issue. I have this problem with all the disks I've tried and on multiple systems that are configured identically.

Secondly, if you read the first post, you'll see this is not back-ups I'm doing, but creating patch CDs that get updated regularly. I have some tight configuration control rules to follow on the systems I maintain and have to manually apply patches. For my offline systems, burning a CD and loading the patches from CD are my only option. That's why I use the RW media, so I'm not burning through CD-Rs every time I need to run patches.

And...I'm NOT formatting disks and never use Drag 'n Drop or Direct-CD.

The burner I'm using is listd above in a previous post--Samsung 332B with firmware T410. They came with the systems--changing them out is not an option--too many systems.

You might have to update the drivers for your CDburner from the manufacturer's websit. The program gets it's information from the burner rather than relying on Roxio driver updates as version 5 did.
